Do not know how to describe this but very recently I got the problem when I want to select a line, instead of that line a large rectangle around a large part of the drawing is selected. Very annoying. This is not always the case and I cannot detect the reason why. To illustrate the problem, I gave a drawing in the attachment. The red "circle" is the line I actually wanted to select but a (dashed line)rectangle is then shown. I am running version 0.92 and my desktop is PCLinuxOS-KDE5.
Looks like grouped elements to me. Try pressing CTRL+Shift+G several times when you have selected the "big square" (bounding box). This should break up the group and every element is selectable itself.
If you want to keep the group, after selecting the square you have to doubleclick on one of the elements in that group. The group gets unselected (you go into this group), the bounding box "vanishes" and you can select the elements in the group, then. To leave the group you have to doubleclick somewhere but one of the elements inside this group.
It also could be an embedded bitmap picture. What happens when this big element is selected and you press Shift+an arrow key (or drag the selection with the mouse)?

Welcome to both of you!
Here's a tutorial for this common problem: https://inkscape.org/learn/tutorials/select-individual-object/
