I'm using Inkscape on 2 different computers. One is a very old Win XP OS on a Dell Dimension 4600 desktop system, with an equally old copy of Inkscape. The other is Win 10 a Dell Latitude 6400 laptop system, with an up to date copy of Inkscape. The problem I'm discussing here only happens when I take a file saved by either version of Inkscape, and try to edit that file in the other version.
At first, I was puzzled why this was happening - upon editing a text object, the several lines of text would collapse into a thin line that couldn't be read. But, last night I figured it out. Two things are happening:
1) The font size is being dropped to the minimum size of 9 pts., and
2) The line spacing is being reset to 0%., which makes all lines of text in the text object written on top of one another; i.e., 0% makes every line end up with no vertical displacement, at the same vertical position in the display, on top of one another.
In the old version of Inkscape, this problem can be compensated for. The solution is to manually reset the font size, and manually reset the line spacing to 100% (or whatever you need).
But, in the new version of Inkscape, this can't be fixed. The new version of Inkscape has NO LINE SPACING CONTROL. In the new version, the only way around this problem is to create an entirely new text object having the text copied from the original, pasted into its text box. Then, delete the original.
But unfortunately, that also means that in the creation of new text objects, the line spacing can't be adjust for fitting into tight vertical places on the page.
Wait a minute... I just checked, and found a line spacing control on the taskbar above the picture window - and yes, it's set at 0%. To get at it, one needs to click with the pointer to set focus on the text object, and then click on the "A" in the left sidebar for working with text. That second click changes the contents in the bar above the drawing, and the line spacing can be fixed from there.

Every tool on the left has controls in the Tools Control Bar, including text: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Text-Formatting.html
