I do wood inlays. I would like to be able to create some sort of library with images of wood types so that I can easily select a wood type image, select the object, then fill it.
I know about "Set Clip" but that is a bit cumbersome and a slow workflow.
I have researched the patterns library but it does not seem to work.
There are so many features in Inkscape that I discover each week, so I must be missing something or there is an extension that will help.

Thanks!
I'd use patterns. It's a bit fiddly to set up, but seems to work as expected.
I am using Inkscape version 1.2 (dc2aeda, 2022-05-15) on a Mac running OSC 12.5.1.
@patricr, what seems to not work about patterns for you?
Suggestions from "webmster" in an email: "Create a new canvas/file. Select a shape from the toolbar, or make a shape with the pen tool.
Click “File” from the top menu File-> Place does not exist in my Inkscape Ver: Inkscape 1.2 (dc2aeda, 2022-05-15).
Using patterns, I could not figure out how to name the patterns.
Yeah, I think there is a troll or a bot screwing around. 😒
There is no "Place" operation in Inkscape.
I googled the phrases used and found them scattered around the web.
I'll make a brief tutorial on naming patterns. Might take a little time.
