I've been working hard for two weeks to create dozens of figures for the next course I have to teach. I'm studying hard and making great progress, but now I'm stuck at this point. I need to join some lines to create a closed shape to fill in. I made two circles then cut path to get two half circles, then I cut the left part of the outermost circle and then draw straight lines.
Like this:
When I try to join those two nodes, the shape changes and I don't understand why.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Using Inkscape 1.4.2 (ebf0e940, 2025-05-08) on Mac Os Sonoma 14.5, attached the svg file.

Paths 14, 12 and 9 have a path-effect applied. Selecting the lines and using menu: Path>Remove Path Effect should resolve this issue.
Oh great!
Thanks Tyler.
Just to learn more...
Why did those paths have path effects? Was it due to my mistakes or other reasons?
Hard to say how they got there. Easy enough to have the Pen Tool's bspline button pressed by accident. That creates paths with effects.
I see!
Thank you very much!
***Note***
A path effect is also used when using "Create Spiro path" mode.
Wild guess: I would imagine setting Shape other than "none" will also result in a path effect. Didn't verify this.
Yep :
