Beyond the Basics How to get a single line path from this pattern

    Hi guys,

I'm trying to get a single line path that appears the same as you see the pattern.

    Having much difficulty.

So far the easiest though not the best solution has been to do a center line trace with an online website.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Naturaljandal,

Can you please explain a bit more whar you want?
What was wrong with the centerline trace you made?

I think you can recreate it by drawing circles, and other basic things you can do in Inkscape.
But you need to learn a bit about the program.

I am needing a little bit more info too, not clear on what a' single path line mean's.  My first thought is to use tiled clones, but perhaps that won't meet your needs?

It's hard to get exact measurements for this with tiled clones, so I'm suggesting to make manual clones by repeatedly duplicating what you have.

    To do this:

    • draw your 7 concentric rings. Group them.
    • create two rows of these rings, one with 2, and one with 3 of them. Snap the objects together, so there's no space in between the groups in each row.
    • move the three-items row up a bit until you got the right amount of overlap, and use snapping or alignment options to center align the two objects correctly.
    • Ungroup the first row with the two concentric rings items. Path > Combine the row.
    • Ungroup the second row with the three concentric rings items. Select them, do Path > Union
    • Now use the three circles in the lower row to cut the concentric rings. Select both, do Path > Cut for this. Make sure that the circles are on top.
    • Delete the parts that you don't need.

Now you've got your pattern base, consisting of two concentric arcs in the correct distance.

Now use duplication and snapping to create a pattern from this.

    Wow Maren,

You took a lot of effort! It looks great.
    It is a beautiful tutorial.

    Hi Guys!

I ended up doing what Maren has so kindly shown.

Creating a single lined path tile, and then cloning it. Unfortunately I didn't find a way to take the original pattern and get single lined paths other than using a website that does centreline tracing (problem was it wasn't exact or neat enough).

If anyone has any other ways to get a single lined path from patterns, please let me know as there's quite a few I'd like to do, without having to manually replicate it.

Thanks for all the help and support.

Hope this topic may be of use to other people.

    Hi,

Patterns take time to be (re)created. It always involves editing by hand to get neat results.

There is a centerline trace extension in Inkscape that you can install. I intend to make a tutorial one day about that.
But these traces always always take time to clean them up.

And there is also the extension to create seamless patterns.
Then you can play around with your original tile to get the result you want.
That is here menu > extensions > render > seamless pattern.

    Good luck.

To build a circle of concentric rings, make a circle. Duplicate, scale down. Duplicate, scale down. Until you have 7 of them.

For setting the distances/sizes correctly, you can use the number fields in the circle tool's settings.

Kirstie, better make the tutorial for the same thing in Inkscape 1.0. The people who built the centerline tracing extension and the Inkscape devs have worked together to build a unified tracing dialog.

    Hi Maren,
    Thanks for the suggestion.
Yes, I read about that centerline trace option. I will hold my breath, it is a very good thing that Inkscape will have this option.
