A "Clone" is driven by its "origin" shape - when you change it the clone will follow along.
A "Duplicate" is simply a copy of an object which is an in-depended object like a child it can live is own life.
A "Copy" is held hostage in the clipboard to be pasted into paths and path-effects or new documents for example like in most other software applications.
