Beginners' Questions Repeated Patterns

How would I repeat a pattern of objects?, an example would be squares surrounding a box (square) like a gear of some sort

    Here is an example:

I don´t understand: Is this "gear" your end result or do you want this to appear around a square? The other way around: do you want to draw the gear or arrange it somewhere?

you are confused but I would want it to appear surrounding a square

the squares are surrounding the object or like what you said, around the square

So yes, around the square it is

    Like so?

Patterns of shapes can be made with:

    • Manual placement
    • Duplicate and Transform
    • Tiled clones
    • Pattern along Path (extension or path-effect)
    • Scatter extension
    • Rotate Copies path-effect

These are described in the manual, but a more detailed explanation of the desired outcome would help find the most appropriate method.

Seems like pattern along path seems to return weird outputs since I wanted short-width triangles surrounding it but instead got this result

The one with the curved triangles is the result, here is the picture

Why not using the Star tool? Or Scatter?
