Beginners' Questions Inkscape crashes when selecting "font 1" in SVG Font Editor on High Sierra

    Hi, all!

First, my system: late-2009 iMac running macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra) and Inkscape 1.0.2 (e86c8708, 2021-01-15).

Next, I'm trying to create a new font by following the instructions in what I think is the official documentation (although I could easily be wrong).

I get as far as  Step 3:

    3. In the column labelled Font, click on New to create a font. You can double-click on the generic name of the font to change it.

When I double-click on "font 1" (or even single-click it), Inkscape crashes without warning or comment.

Is this a known bug? I find GitHub confusing and GitLab incomprehensible, so I'm afraid I couldn't tell.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I grant it could just be my antiquated system, but there's nothing I can do about it right now.

    Thanks!

Just a small update: I tried working without naming the font, but it wouldn't let me add glyphs or anything. Nothing happened when I clicked anything but "font 1" and then it died as before.

Sound related to this report: https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/-/issues/266

Well . . . to be perfectly frank, I couldn't follow all that.

I gathered that you think it's fixed. I regret to report it ain't.

I opened Inkscape. I closed the Objects dialog. I made a new Typography Canvas from the template. The first time, the Objects dialog popped open again. I closed it. I opened the SVG Editor and created a new font. I clicked on "font 1". It crashed.

Just to make sure, I opened Inkscape again. This time the SVG Editor was open. I didn't close it but went ahead with the new canvas. When I clicked on "font 1," it crashed.

So this time, when I opened Inkscape and the SVG Editor dialog was open, I closed it. I then proceeded as per the documentation already cited. Same results.

I appreciate that this is an obscure feature, but I really need it. We're talking survival need here. (I can provide details if you think it's relevant, but I'll skip it now.)

The issue in the open (active) report is isolated to MacOS, and currently unresolved.

One tester had it working  using an earlier Inkscape beta version: https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.0beta2/This might work, but have other issues.

If installing the Inkscape beta is not an option:

In survival mode, I'd buy/borrow/use another computer running Linux or Windows to get the font created. I'd check the local library.

Another possible workaround is to use a "live" bootable Linux disk to run Inkscape under Linux while the font is designed, then return to MacOS when needed. If desired, the Linux OS can be installed at the same time as the MacOS ("dual-boot"),  and it will run much faster than from a live disk.  (I'm running Inkscape 1.02-2 under  Linux Mint 19 on older iMac Hardware.)

I'm housebound. (Imagine a Black-Friday shopping experience every time you step out your front door. Welcome to life as an autistic.)

I'll try installing the beta. Is it possible to run two versions of Inkscape on the same Mac?

Thank you so much for the translation and the response!

I would avoid the complications of two Inkscape versions, especially on a Mac; there just aren't as many users or developers to provide support.

I have not tried the Font Editor in the later versions, but I tried quite a lot on v ~0.48 ish and it used to crash a lot. I guess a lot of those issues is fixed now, but as it crashes on step 3 on your Mac I would like to recommend the Custom Stroke Font extension to create your fonts. I have not tried it with Mac, but I really think it is worth a try. Here is the link to it and its tutorials (scroll down to find the tutorial/videos). I have also written about my own modifications to make it even more efficiant on my blog

Well, I do have two versions installed now. . . .

The SVG Font Editor is working in 1.0beta 2, but I grant the concerns about two versions, so I'll look into Custom Stroke Font—thanks, Ellen! I've got your blog bookmarked now, so that I can try it.

I'll post with any strangeness I get.

Thanks much! I am very much over my head here!
