I tried Trace Bitmap to remove the background of an image. (It doesn't have a background; it's completely transparent. Inkscape acts like it's still there, though.)
I was in the third tab of it in order to get my image in color. I had Live Preview on. I hit Apply. Nothing happened, and Inkscape behaved as if nothing was happening except it wouldn't let me go to any other dialog. Trace Bitmap just sat there. I couldn't close it. I couldn't go elsewhere. Inkscape let me quit, though.
I thought the file might be damaged, so I went to an earlier version. The Trace Bitmap dialog was still up and still wouldn't let me go elsewhere.
I regret to report that I am using the same antiquated system: a late 2012 MacBook Pro running Catalina (macOS 10.15.7). I am using Inkscape 1.3.2 (091e20e, 2023-11-25)—which it would not let me copy from the button on the About screen!
I just want to get Trace Bitmap closed so that I can use less complex methods to remove that invisible background. I fear it is the antiquity of my system that is causing the problem, but that doesn't solve my problem.
Do you use floating panels? If so I´m under the impression when the "close" button is over the main Inkscape window a "click through" takes place - when I move the panel aside it will close when just the Finder is underneath.

Can anybody help?
Thank you!
I think I may have solved my own problem. Despite appearances, Inkscape was still running.
I forced it to quit. When I restarted, it let me close the Trace Bitmap tab without complaint.
I'll be back if it misbehaves further!
