Beginners' Questions Help... not sure how to add text onto an object but only cut out the outter part

I wanted to make the cross attached for my cricut.

The goal was to have all the text on the cross and then cut out just the cross outter shape (not any text)... the cricut wanted to cut everything

So I thought I could do with Inkscape by putting text and the cross on the page and create union, well that didn't work, the text was swallowed up.

Is there a smart way to put all the text to create a shape in inkscape but create only a path for the outter cross shape and keep all the text and colors ?

    Thanks for any help...

Export as .PNG and upload to Cricut Design Space. Design Space can remove the background for you. Just follow the instructions given in the upload image process.

OMG, that was so easy.... I would never have figured that out ...but it worked fantastically.

    Thank you
