Hey can anyone share some tips? i copied a shape with seperate drawn outlines and pasted it on top of eachother rotated and overlapping in different areahs and directions how can i make so the visible outline be merged in all one piece without the parts of the outlines being obscured by the other shapes

We really can't guess from that description.  Please share your SVG file.

    Hi.

Usually butchering it is the quickest and most reliable solution.

Create a raster copy/export and import it back- at a high resolution and run trace bitmap.

Manual redrawing yields the best result though.

I'm not completely sure what you have in mind but I'll give it a try. What i think you mean is:

Afer drawing two shapes, say two rectangles, that overlap the goal is to have a  simple outline around the combination.

I suggest using the union operation under the path menu. I did this using the 1.0 beta version, on older version you may have to convert object to path first.

Hope that helps;  I'm only a few step along the learning curve myself so others may have better ideas.

Yeah, I almost answered that myself.  But something about the description doesn't fit with that.  So hopefully we can see the SVG file, and find out exactly what the problem is.

My best guess is that he needs to make the fills of all the shapes transparent, so all the strokes can show through.  However, I have a suspicion he might be using imported raster images - which would be a whole other thing.

So I wait for the real thing, before I give detailed instructions.

I see that the opposite way.

how can i make so the visible outline be merged in all one piece without the parts of the outlines being obscured by the other shapes

Keeping the overlapped look of the strokes would be preferred.

Which would require Booleans on each for cutting, intersecting and then combining them together into one single path.

Like drawing a coloring book but from overlapping shapes, and merging everything because the final image is printed by a plotter/laser engraved.

So maybe then my suggestion with the trace bitmap wasn't that close either because he'd need the centerline trace of the raster double.

At this point, who really knows.

Sorry Im in a situation where I cant share the svg im going to try to better explain it thanks for bearing with me

    https://www.trinimbus.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Spring-Cleaning-Your-AWS-Account.jpg

heres a example (not my image). I have every object fully drawn seperately with stylized outlines that are separate strokes and color separately selectable. and aggranged them on top of Each other like this image. im trying to turn all the outlines that are visible into one selectable object like this image

    https://making-the-web.com/sites/default/files/clipart/132136/clutter-cliparts-132136-2530176.jpg

But with merge it keeps grabbing the outlines that are under the color shapes too and shows like the first part of this image

I hesitate to give you a definite answer, because you shared 2 different images.  But I think what you're asking for is magic.  There's no easy way to do that.

For example, let's start with 2 of the objects on top

    • select the red book and duplicate it
    • add the blue book to the selection
    • Path menu > Difference

That will take away the corner of the blue book that's under the red one.  You'll need to continue with that routine until you're finished.  Then

    • select all
    • Path menu > Combine
    • everything will turn one color, but you can add a stroke if there isn't one, and remove the fill.

There might be a faster way to do this though -- it really is kind of magic.  But the outline won't be a single path.  It's a little hard to explain, you kind of have to see it.  If you're familiar with what Path menu > Stroke to Path does, that's what happens.  So the results might not be acceptable, for example, if you're planning to cut this design out using a digital cutter.  But it will look exactly like what you showed, even if it's not structured they way you need.

Select your drawing with all the objects on top of each other, and do Edit menu > Make a Bitmap Copy.  This will create a PNG version of it on the canvas.

Then use Path menu > Trace Bitmap.  Use the Single Scan option called Brightness Cutoff.  I had to adjust the threshold to 0.100, to stop some of the darker objects showing up black.

Let us know if that's what you need.

    Edit

Note that the results of Trace Bitmap are right on top of the original, and you might not realize that something happened.  So after you click OK button, drag the original image away, and you'll be able to see the outlines that you want.

I wonder why his images have that blocked image image?  Is that what happens when you paste an image into the editor?

I just get a never ending "wait" animation (spinning thing) when I try to paste in an image.

    Offtopic:

Have no idea. Pasting image here works the most part. Had problem with pasting in the animated svg in the knot topic which didn't work.

But it's the first time I see those blocked thumbnails which is already further I could achieve as I still didn't find a way for hotlinking images.

Like not even for the about screen announcement; had to attach it to the post which is basically reuploading to the gallery.

I'm attempting to do something similar (two images one on top of the other. I don't want the laser to "double" cut where the images overlap. I've tried all the "path" function and they function accordingly with figures I draw such as circle, square but not with my two images? What's the fix Imy deadline is Sunday it the money box for a wedding PLEASE HELP

Since you're in a hurry, we can finish your problem here.  But in the future, please start a new topic for each new problem.  Even if you think it's the same as someone else's, we prefer that you start a new topic.  Thanks!

@Onelac it's really hard to guess.  And especially if you're in a hurry, guessing takes much longer.  As TD suggested, an SVG file will be the fastest route to the right answer.
