Beginners' Questions Circle and Squre

I'm trying to show a path of travel. And the path is like a square on the left and like a circle on the right.

Sorry, the "moderator must approve newbie's post" feature prevented me from previewing my question and writing it more clearly.

I'm still struggling to make this shape.

Can I convert this closed polygon to lines, so that I can then delete segments, or move nodes? The tools I'm trying aren't working (e.g. path / object to path).

One attempt: I placed a square on top of the circle and "did operation". That was pretty good. But it still left me with a closed polygon.

Right now when I draw a circle, it draws a pacman like shape, and I tried using that to my advantage.

Attached you see a "circle". Bottom right to a little middle left is a straight edge. And middle left and about 1/3 to the right is a straight edge.

I briefly saw the menu where I can choose if the polygon is a circle, a "pacman", or an arc. I'd like to make it an arc. How can I do that?

(So far, I'm able to "upload file" as attachment, but not insert image next to my text.)

This is pretty much what I want. I now want to remove the "lines" in the center which have a big red X over them. I'd like this whole thing to be a line / or lines so I can add mid-line arrows showing path of travel.

On this forum, how do you insert an image into the body of the text in the forum post?

You can drag the image into the editor window where you´re writing a reply or use the paperclip icon to upload.

If I understood correctly, Shape Builder might be your solution.

Draw the circle. Draw the overlapping rectangle. Select both then [x] opens the shape builder tool. Click the sectors you want to retain then [enter].

Why is InkScape difficult about Save As. How do I Save As, but same file name with a v02. Can't it present me with its present file name in the Save As box?

Helpful: for making a partial circle, that is open (an arc) for the "path of travel" was to click on the circle "Elipse/Art Tool", and in the menu at the top of the screen select Arc, instead of Chord, Slice, or Whole Elipse.

As shown in the GIF reply#5. Plus tip: moving cursor in or out the circle will generate an arc or slice - no need to push a button.

Here´s your "travel path" in pretty one go:

Wow, you make it look easy.

How would you make the line art of a boat. I'm having trouble messing with the pen tool and the bezier curves.

Also, since it's symmetrical, would it be useful to draw half and then just duplicate that and flip it? Would there be a way to then join the two halves, in case I need to "fill" it with color (probably white)?

    I'm not satisfied with mine

I traced one side of your image, grouped the paths, applied the mirror path effect, removed some nodes, and finally converted the result to a single path.

What I usually do is to make a clone right in the beginning - flipping it vertically (V) and edit the original path - when I´m done I unlink the clone - select both paths with the Node-tool and the overlapping nodes - hit "Join selected nodes". At the back I delete the nodes at the guide and hit "Join selected endnodes with a new segment."

I just recently discovered using this clone tech in my designs. It really does save so much time and frustration.

Thank you. That is super helpful. My diagram is now much better.

How do you make your animated gifs? They're great.

I have a line drawing of a seated person. Is there a way to convert an image like this into one polygon so I can fill it with white. The join node tool doesn't seem to work on this task.

The head is a closed polygon and I'm having trouble joining the shoulder line to the head. Some times I can add a node or split a line between two nodes. But how would I join three nodes, I don't think I can.

I suppose I could "fake it" by drawing an outline that follows the outer lines and then filling that.

What I do in these cases is:

Draw a rectangle as a border

Take the Paint bucket tool and fill the inbetween

Delete outer path - apply fill color - delete rectangle - send under motive:
