I'm in Inkscape 1.1.1 and have to question about paths. Please find attached the image I'm working on.
1. How do I change the black undercarriage of the train so that it is exactly adjacent to the grey bridge? Currently the undercarriage is drawn too big as I don't see how you can snap to a line in another object when drawing a bezier curve. I have treid to use boolean path operators (both split path and difference) when both paths are selected, but this lead to unwanted results. I also tried duplicating one of the two paths before trying this. But none of the operations lead to the required result, which is to make the undercarrigage smaller by the part that extends over the bridge.
PS I am aware that I could move the bridge up in the image order which would hide the undercarriage but as I am preparing this file for a lasercutter, the paths should be exactly adjacent (not overlapping).
2. How do I make sure the vertical lines in the bezier curves (for example, the sides of the windows) are exactly vertical? I have tried hiolding the CTRL key while moving a node, but that does not make the node snap in place.
I have read the node editing help file and the path operations help file, but don't understand fully how the above should work. I have also tried to find this in youtube but haven't found solutions yet.
Thank you! Much appreciated. The snapping options where useful. I ended up drawing vertical guides along the window stills to get the lines exactly vertical.
The duplicate + difference solution works, but I found that it is important which object is on top. (that's what she said).

Hi.
If you want to use the Node tool you need to Enable Snapping->Nodes-->Paths/Cusp nodes/Perpendicular lines.
An easier way might be to: duplicate the bridge - add select with undercarriage then go Path->Difference.
Thank you! Much appreciated. The snapping options where useful. I ended up drawing vertical guides along the window stills to get the lines exactly vertical.
The duplicate + difference solution works, but I found that it is important which object is on top. (that's what she said).
A duplicate will be automatically generated on top - so in this case no extra action needed.
