Hello everyone! This is my first post on here and I hope that the community could shed some light on a problem I have just encountered.
I opened some saved graphic files (svg) into Inkscape V0.92 and noticed that all the text was missing. I have opened each and every one and it's the same.
My operation system is Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon 4.6.7
Any help on this matter would be very much appreciated,
Here is an example of a home made beer lable with all missing text. It's probably around at least a year since I have used Inkscape and since then I have upgraded to Mint 20.
It's looking perfectly texty to me, in both Inkscape 0.92.3 and 1.0.1, on Ubuntu Mate. Could it just be missing fonts on your upgraded machine (though I would still expect Inkscape to fall back to other fonts in that case).
Try using the Edit > Find/Replace dialog. Expand the "Options" section and set it to search only "Texts" in the bottom (Object Types) part. Clicking find tells me that 36 objects were found (and selects them). Do you get the same?
Hi Xav, and thank you for your swift reply. I am away from home as we speak and not back until tomorrow morning. I will check out your suggestions. Interestingly I did notice that some fonts were crossed out this morning when I had tried to recreate some text on the graphics, but ran out of time to investigate further.
Hi Xav, checked out your suggestion and yes I found the 36 objects. Interestingly, when I click on the uploaded file that I had posted (within the forum), some of the text is displayed but does not show up in Inkscape. I have tried the replace function, ie find "Birthday" which found 4 objects and replaced with "Birthday" but this didn't replace the text.
I have also downloaded the true Microsoft fonts and installed them to see whether that makes any difference which I'm afraid it doesn't !
(I do admit that I am not the greatest graphic designer, and not as familiar with the package as maybe I ought to be).
Hmm, do you have any other possible reasons for the missing text?
The obvious fonts in the file are "Century Schoolbook L" and "URW Chancery L" - neither of which are part of Microsoft's core web fonts (assuming those are the Microsoft fonts you're referring to).
I would use the Find function to select all 36 text objects, then switch to the Text tool and pick a different font from the drop-down. If the text appears (albeit now with the wrong font), then it's just the missing fonts that's the problem, otherwise there's something else going on (I've no idea what, though).
Xav, I have just this minute followed your instructions, and the text has reappeared !!!
Thank you so much for all your help on this matter. It is very much appreciated. It has encouraged me to get to know the package better and go through the tutorials.

Tutorials, you say? I might just be able to help you out there:
https://inkscape.org/forums/tutorials/inkscape-tutorials-in-full-circle-magazine/
(It's also worth going through the tutorials in the Inkscape Help menu to get a quick grasp of some of the key concepts in the program)
Hey Xav, your help is boundless !
Stay safe and have a great Christmas!

I have just checked out your tutorials, it's very comprehensive!
Thank you so much.
