Please post your finished artwork below.
All entries to be submitted by 30 September 2022.
Please do spread the word! #inkscapechallenge
Instructions/Information
To submit your artwork, scroll to the bottom of the page and while logged in, click the paperclip (bottom-left) to upload your image, add a description in the text box (optional) and click "Submit Reply".
If you'd like to post work-in-progress artwork, create a thread in the "Work in Progress" section of the forum, and post your images there, with the title "September 2022 Move the Light WIP - [your artwork title]" (you are welcome to ask for help there if you get stuck). When finished, post the final graphic to this thread.
This challenge will run from 1 September 2022 - 30 September 2022. There are no winners. These challenges are intended to inspire, to encourage you to share your work and to build a supportive community.
You're encouraged to discuss and offer feedback/constructive criticism to others, but please be respectful.
Most importantly, be creative, give your best, and have fun!
Hi What I tried here is to use the checkered pattern on different objects with different lighting. I mean, in this case the common denominator would be the pattern and not the object. The idea for the sphere came to me as soon as I saw Pacer's great image 😄
Thanks for the compliment @mrks9 and your entries continue to get stronger.
Recently I resisted the temptation to be too elaborate with the banner artwork as I think it can obscure the objective of the challenge, but I may have a go at the challenge myself later to explore the concept.
@all
I made an error. I neglected to update the title beneath the banner after the last challenge. It now states, correctly: "Draw any object more than once with different lighting".
After receiving feedback from the challengers (a couple of months ago), I feel/hope that these new challenges will help to support improvement in artwork (with a focus on realism) while also providing freedom for personal expression.
@pacer I don't think it would obscure anything, on the contrary, it would be very instructive to see your approaches. I have always taken that first image as the first entry of the challenge 😋
@ken10001000 I'll give you a point for the fact that there is a reflection on the balloons, a point for good intentions and a point for managing to always find a loophole for the odd and unusual in every challenge. ;)
Pacer, I do not mean to distract, offend, nor under-value these challenges. This is a great one, yet difficult for me. I promise to refrain (restrain) myself in what I post here.
Thank you for understanding and giving me the lee-way that you have. Have a great weekend.
@ken10001000 Don't worry about that. The challenges are there for everyone to have fun, and to experiment (at their own pace). While I love to see the graphics, I'm also here for the chat and your participation is always valued, as is your support of the others. :)
@mrks9 as I enjoyed seeing your basketball, I had a go at one myself. To keep it relevant to the challenge, I have attempted to merge your basketball concept with my banner concept (light from behind). Sorry, in advance, for stealing your idea.
@pacer Excellent! The softer light, the erosion on the elements (letters and symbol) and the pattern really raises the level of realism. Also the way in which the letters are adapted to the ball. If I had to add anything to it, it would be some noise effect or something on the black lines to break up the uniformity. Fantastic work, thanks for sharing 🤯 💯
My aim is not to detract from the challenges, only support them, as I can. We each have our skill sets and creative imaginations. I am still learning and definitely from you and other users. I want the piece of the pie I share to be tasty and appropriate. I will re-think and re-tool what I post. Humor is part of me. Let's keep bringing "what we got". Enjoy a wonderful day.
A simple spire serving as a gnomon for observing time based on the length/direction of the spire shadow. Of course, there' "must" be a little gnome on the image to accomplish the pun/wordplay.
@mrks9 brilliant work! Love the attention to detail. You have made a good effort at the shading. I like that I can see through the window and your artwork is enhanced by the people in the foreground. This must have taken some time. Thank you for another great entry.
Thanks, @pacer . Yes, it's been a challenge for me, but it's enjoyed it. I must say that the interiors are images, it would take me a long time to make all the pieces. I find that silhouettes help in the visualization of proportions
@Lazur Man, this is crazy. I wouldn't even know where to start, you must have a well-developed spatial vision. You're right, this in Blender is a moment, a couple of extrusions, some light points, an HDR and that's it. Good work, thanks for sharing 💯
It's more like creating a filter -the real challenge is to deal with the lack of a proper gui and have great understanding what you are doing, remembering previous steps and figuring out some hierarchy between the mess.
Had some thoughts how it'd be much easier if
-you could "group" guide lines and put onto separate layers
-change the appearance of a group of guidelines from colour to opacity to visibility
-guidelines had a larger "hit range" -easier to select, move and rotate
-there was a way to automatically generate new guidelines popping up with origins fixed at specific points
Was told at the chat it's very unlikely to happen because how guidelines are stored.
To be able to be seen across the document you cannot put them inside a hierarchical arrangement as far as I understood.
So the best bet to create somekind of tutorial of this kind of construction is using paths instead of guidelines.
But it's in no shape or form an effective way for creating-generating visuals for 3D.
@Lazur a very thorough approach and a good demonstration of how perspective work can be carried out in Inkscape.
I must admit that most of the 3D(ish) bits I do are 'eyeballed', although I do use perspective guides (to a lesser degree) for more complex scenes --- such as the Christmas banner (as they tend to look off if I guess).
Although arguably impractical to use Inkscape in this way, it is more interesting when the goal is challenging. I prefer tools to open doors to opportunity (map and compass) rather than to automate process (GPS). Looking at your previous works, I can see that, for all your frustrations, you are drawn toward the edge of Inkscape's capabilities.
Sorry for the late comment. Had a lot on my plate... Just catching up with myself. :)
Thank you for taking part in this month's challenge, I hope you all enjoyed it. I have uploaded next month's challenge banner a few days early to give you all some extra time to think about your entries.
Welcome @Ndim_Donald. Thank you for the kind message.
You are right, the challenge officially closes end-of-day on the 30th. But we don't mind if your entry is late. The thread stays open indefinitely for those who missed the deadline.
Sorry if my previous message confused things. October's challenge begins on October 1st, and I posted the banner early to give the challengers time to come up with ideas.
Looking forward to your September entry, and I hope you stick around for the October challenge too. :)
We challenge you to:
Draw any object more than once with different lighting.

Challenge entries (so far)
I ran out of time for last months challenge. However, I shamelessly added light and shadow to the same thing I was busy with. Soz😅
@idmarillier Thank you for your entry. Don't worry if your entry is late for a challenge. We leave the comments open for late entries and comments.

The final versions using Krita.

@MarcoS Gonzalez
Night Fever Vibes!
Another couple of images
And a retouch with Gimp
Quality work @mrks9. It looks very realistic! I'm definitely seeing an upward trend. Thank you for another great entry.
Thanks, @pacer 😊
Marcos, swish!! Straight in the net with excellence. Great work.
@ken10001000 Thanks, Ken 😉
For the "dog" days of summer.
I know this is not truly different lighting.(Unless you assume there's a colored light bulb inside each balloon.)
But I am still taking baby steps here.
I wanted some twisted balloon fun.
Maybe I will get a point for effort and good intentions. :)
@ken10001000 I'll give you a point for the fact that there is a reflection on the balloons, a point for good intentions and a point for managing to always find a loophole for the odd and unusual in every challenge. ;)

@ken10001000 Ken, don't refrain from posting anything. Your drawings are original and very funny. I think everyone here would agree with that 🙌

Thank you both, Pacer and Marcos.

Two views of the same building. The building is not my creation, it is my interpretation of a real museum, the Steel Art Museum.
Final with Inkscape...
And retouching with Gimp.
@mrks9 brilliant work! Love the attention to detail. You have made a good effort at the shading. I like that I can see through the window and your artwork is enhanced by the people in the foreground. This must have taken some time. Thank you for another great entry.

Gave 2 point perspective construction
a go-rather 2 goes, since the lightsource moved inbetween? One of them shows a distant light source and a diagonal light direction at 45°,
while the other has an invisible point lightsource atop the stairs.
Attaching the svg and a screen capture of the guide lines switched on.
That's how it looks like constructed "manually", without any perspective path effects.
Too bad there is no way to manage guide lines together in a group/on a layer. It's fun.
Anyway, construction took about 5 hours which would take 5 minutes in blender.
There was an error attaching 4 files in the previous post, so putting the results here separately.
