If you'd like to post work-in-progress artwork, create a thread in the "Work in Progress" section of the forum, and post your images there, with the title "October 2022 Break Something WIP - [your artwork title]" (you are welcome to ask for help there if you get stuck). When finished, post the final graphic to this thread.
There are no winners. These challenges are intended to inspire, to encourage you to share your work and to build a supportive community.
You're encouraged to discuss and offer feedback/constructive criticism to others, but please be respectful.
Most importantly, be creative, give your best, and have fun!
@ken10001000 The chairs have some interesting effects, but the portrait is absolutely gorgeous, really expressive. Great work, thanks for sharing, Ken 💯
Thank you, Pacer and Marcos. Great work, Pacer ... the first image starting off this challenge, and the art of the bird in broken pieces.And your images, Algot, beautiful.
I hope Kubrick and C. Clarke don't be turning in their graves for such a sacrilege 😋 I don't like the jpg format, but I'm getting out of space to share in the forum 😊
@mrks9 Thanks for the hope you offer. I began with the idea of using the Red Sox on the cup, in light of their season, but settled on the Pats for the better logo fit on the broken cup. I have a long way to go to get to the quality level of you and the others in these contests, but am having fun with the effort.
@Ndim_Donald Thanks. As a simple amateur, shading and lighting is the most difficult for me.
@AlgotRuneman As you rightly say, I also do these challenges to have fun and learn from others. And I like this space because it is very respectful of everyone. Here it's not about competing, but about sharing 😉
I don't like the jpg format, but I'm getting out of space to share in the forum
I have spoken to doctormo and he has increased your storage capacity, but he asks that you be careful with it as the space on the server is limited. With great power comes great responsibility ;)
@pacer Thank you so much. I usually answer questions visually with videos and I think I will have to stop doing that. I will try to be more space rationed 👍 I may be doing something wrong without knowing it by sharing 🤔
You have just shared a ton of great artwork.We want you to keep doing that!
I would just make sure that the dimensions of your exports are optimal and, where possible, look at optimising raster graphics (although that won't do much for PNG). I have been experimenting personally with webp and avif with good results on image quality and file size. I tried using webp for the banners, but some social platforms didn't like it.
If you want to create a bit of space, you could look to see if there are duplicate graphics or anything heavy in the uploads on your account. I found loads of duplicates on my account from re-uploading minor edits (files are renamed instead of overwritten by default).
Got your message. Sorry having issues with direct messages at the mo. I'm not sure what caused the issue, but I have removed the duplicate message for you on this thread. I hope that helps.
Nicely done, sir. I have been thinking of how to make some stone like letters. Perhaps something will come of it. Anyway, thank you Marcos. You stir my imagination with your fine work.
@ken10001000 Thanks, Ken. I've recently discovered quite a bit of inspiration through the https://www.wombo.art/create site. That's all it's good for, as a reference, but typing in some words brings up some very interesting stuff. The images themselves are not good, but the compositions are really inspiring 😉
@ken10001000 pleased to see some more fun pieces. Thanks for the entries.
@mrks9 I have to say it and I'm sure at this rate i'll be saying it again soon... I think the rock landscape has got to be my favorite Marcos art yet. Did you gimp any of the final design?
@pacer Thanks, Pacer. I'm not sure what you mean, maybe the translator didn't do his work right. But it's all done with Inkscape, even the background is done with the Watercolor filter. The final result does include levels and color retouching with Gimp. I always do it, because I am not able to get those effects with Inkscape alone. Ah, the bridge is recycled from a previous work with Inkscape 🙂
@pacer As I said, with the Watercolor filter, only in the final image it looks more powerful because I duplicated it several times and played with the proportions.
@Ndim_Donald She's actually a bar lady. I try to mostly do these in sets. One isometric drawing and one character. This one forms part of the Dragon's Egg Pub. Which coincidentally has four images for some reason. This is not the place for that but if you want you can check my profile in the gallery. All of them are there.
This turned out to be a nice training for using the Clipping feature a lot while working with many Layers and Objects. I drew the CD first and then I started masking different parts of it so I could transform the fragments individually. A photo on Flickr inspired me for this image.
@mrks9 I really like the finishing touches you did. These details make the rocks really pop out. Its also nice how you faded the light texures with the shapes. Really inspiring!
To me the colour-choice in the final image fits much better than in the earlier version. The yellows and reds fit the mood just perfectly and add a little rock-desert-feeling to it. Nice!
@mako-gfx Thanks, it's part of the process. The first image is what I manage to do with Inkscape, for the second one I complement it with Gimp or Krita 🎨
@ken10001000 A good look Ken. I can see the stained glass effect. For another time perhaps, I have found that glass looks very realistic if you show distorted objects through the glass. Glass pieces like this might display a slightly altered view (angle) of their environment from the adjacent shards.
I hope that is useful to you. Thanks for a great entry! :)
Wow! Only halfway through the month and the contest/challenge is shattering the level of involvement I'm remembering from past months. The variety of styles and artistic approaches is inspiring. I'm excited to see how the second half of the month develops.
@AlgotRuneman I guess people love to break things 🤣. It is fun to see all the different approaches. My favorite part is to see people integrate things they have learned. I can see there is a ton of improvement over time. Priceless!
As you say, it's awesome to see so much involvement and encouragement. I put this down to the regular challengers and their hard work and support of newcomers. I like putting the challenges on, and you all (coming back and supporting each other) make it so much more enjoyable.
Thank you, Pacer and Marcos. Honestly, I think this recent stained glass picture is my poorest entry in this challenge. Maybe I can come up with something different.
Like you, I encourage all Inkscapers to dive in and share something they like.
In this image I used another method to create the shards. First I created random forms of shards with the polygon-tool. Then I applied gradients to it. I used these forms with the spray-tool to create more shards with random variation in size and angle. To achieve the randomized shard-borders I cloned all shards on a new layer. Then I combined all forms and used "convert strokes to path. Now I could add a "Roughen" effekt on all shard-borders, giving randomness to the border-thickness. I struggled to draw the splashing liquid, so I decided to keep it simple, cloud-like in this case.
@mrks9 reminds me a bit of spiderman, because of the white thin lines on red ground:) Its slightly confusing with all those lines through the Letters but I like that a lot!
Thank you @ken10001000 No problem. This is fairly quick.
- Write out some text, convert it to paths and unify it. - Go to Filters > Distort > Felt Feather - Tweak the sliders until you are happy with the distortion. (this works for clouds too)
For the water, I just started with a rectangle for the base and some smaller elongated rectangles for highlights and shadows (I used variations of the base colour).
Follow the same steps as the text (unify the highlights... Felt Feather...etc.), but I found that increasing the intensity slider, felt more realistic for water.
@ken10001000 I like that samurai. It reminds me of the moais on Easter Island. The letters effect on the last one is cool. You could finish the background in the shape of a stained glass window 🙂
Heads up everyone! There are still several days remaining for this month's challenge. But the next challenge is emerging. As before, I want to give you all a chance to come up with ideas ahead of time. November's challenge is to........... Draw something in motion 🧨🍃. Challenge banner to follow.
Looking forward to seeing what you can come up with.
@pacer I think the image of @bleke looks great as an example of motion, but could you also do something similar to the image I show? made in Inkscape not long ago. Could that represent motion? Another option would be to animate, but I don't know how to do it 😋
@bleke That's a great idea, thanks for the tip. Although in this particular case I couldn't because there is a lot of post-production in Gimp and I would have to use a lot of masks, not only in the silhouettes, also in the reflection.
Everything you don't know how to do appears difficult, but everything is straightforward when you know how to do it.
There are numerous kinds/methods of animation and they are different in their process/application/concept.
I don't know how to animate in blender (I've never tried), but I do know how to animate (to some degree) using SMIL and CSS. I think you would be surprised how quickly you could get something to move.
@pacer Nice animation, it seems that some kind of interpolation is running. I guess you're right, maybe it's just getting on with it, although I prefer more visual methods. I've been watching some Enve video lately and maybe I'll download the program, but I still find it overwhelming, too many parameters to keep control of 🙄😃
Graphical software has it's place, though sometimes it is a lot harder to do things you want to do (due to lack of options).
The Linux command line used to look intimidating to me until I started to learn it. I soon moved much of my workflow to the terminal and stopped using a ton of graphical applications.
For example, when I message you all (the challengers) on here, I use the terminal to tell me all of the people who took part. I use the terminal to resize/optimise the banners before I post them.
The same is true for my migration to open source software. It's a challenge at first, but soon you become more efficient (no more MS Windows, Adobe, MS Office... )... and we all love challenges ;)
Those animations (linked above) were prepared mostly with Inkscape.
I like SMIL as it allows you to create two or more shapes (in Inkscape if preferred) and, with a couple of lines of code, morph them into each other. The rotating shapes animation was a little more involved, but didn't take too long to figure out.
My goal here was to experiment with filters, clipped textures and the roughen Path-effekt to achieve the effect of torn cardboard. I struggled a lot with the half-torn layers. I ended up creating a texture in Gimp, instead of using photographed textures. For the inner waves and cardboard I used free textures and put them in a clip-group. Generelly I wish there were more filters in inkscape that have just one specific effect like drop shadow, instead of simulating materials. At least for me I couldn´t achieve the desired effects just by using those complex filters. Creating my own filters is still too complicated for me.
ps: The "filters.svg" in inkscape/share/examples is REALLY helpful if you struggle with finding the fitting filter 👍
I really like your design @mako-gfx An unusual concept, and well executed. The torn edges of the letters are so realistic.If you do get frustrated with anything in the future and want some input from someone else, start a thread in the WIP section and drop me a link. Thank you for another excellent entry!
124 comments before the end of the month. Wow. That will be hard to beat. Thank you all for being so encouraging to each other and for your great entries.
November's challenge is now live and (as mentioned previously) the topic is motion.
Help us to build this challenge and spread the word. If you know anyone who you think may enjoy these challenges, please drop them a link.

Challenge entries (so far)
A different kind of broken.
@ken10001000
Nice work. A creative concept and interesting style. Thank you for a great entry.
A flyer for a firewood sale ... from broken chairs.
@ken10001000 The chairs have some interesting effects, but the portrait is absolutely gorgeous, really expressive. Great work, thanks for sharing, Ken 💯
Attempting something I hadn't seen done in Inkscape.
Worry and doubt assail us as the Red Sox finish in the cellar of the American League East and injuries plague the just-starting football season.
Thank you, Pacer and Marcos. Great work, Pacer ... the first image starting off this challenge, and the art of the bird in broken pieces.And your images, Algot, beautiful.
Very talented company here.
Beautiful effect, @pacer 💯
@AlgotRuneman Nice. Don't get ahead of yourself, maybe they will surprise you 😅
I hope Kubrick and C. Clarke don't be turning in their graves for such a sacrilege 😋
I don't like the jpg format, but I'm getting out of space to share in the forum 😊
Great dissolve effect @pacer That's dope!! 🔥
@mrks9 oh graves!!! 🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️💨
Not my time yet... still got much to do on this earth 😂😅
cool use of backlighting and shadows!
@mrks9 Thanks for the hope you offer. I began with the idea of using the Red Sox on the cup, in light of their season, but settled on the Pats for the better logo fit on the broken cup. I have a long way to go to get to the quality level of you and the others in these contests, but am having fun with the effort.

@Ndim_Donald
Got your message. Sorry having issues with direct messages at the mo. I'm not sure what caused the issue, but I have removed the duplicate message for you on this thread. I hope that helps.
Great..! @pacer Thanks man 🙏
Golden Text
Fracture 🔨
Very creative, Marcos. Thank you for sharing this.
Despite all the heartbreaks, We choose to move on, we don't stay down, we keep our heads high!!!
Can't stay in the shadows cuz there's always a reason to live for, a reason to love for!!!
The Art: Broken Inside!!
Except for the scripture, Every single bit of this art is made on INKSCAPE!
@Ndim_Donald Fantastic image. I really like this kind of compositions. Thanks for sharing it 💯
I love seeing the images posted here which show me a level I might strive to meet.
These monthly contests/challenges are great inspiration.
@mrks9 It's a pleasure 😊... Let's keep making things happen 🔥
I like humor.
This is supposed to be a simple mosaic-like piece.
The fence is broken down (mentally and otherwise).
We're not held back anymore.
A few weeks back I shared a tutorial on making "Fake Wireframes". I used a creation from then and re-purposed it here.
This is to be another mosaic-like piece (or stained glass), composed of hroken shapes.
It is Ducky Time, right?
Hi. Another mosaic-esque thing made of broken pieces.
Rest easy. You are loved.
Rock framed landscape.
@pacer I tell you this because the translator returns this "Did you do anything of the final design?" 😅
@mrks9 That's cool. How did you do the sky/clouds effect?
@pacer As I said, with the Watercolor filter, only in the final image it looks more powerful because I duplicated it several times and played with the proportions.
@mrks9 thank you for clarifying. Beautiful work!
@pacer No problem. Oh, and for the sky base object, instead of using gradients, I used mesh gradient. I almost forgot this detail 😋
Well, laziness has struck again! Just added something broken to what I was already working on! "Drink up me hearties yo ho's!"
In the few months of using Inkscape I sure have learnt alot and do not plan to stop using it. A Brilliant product!
@foreverNoob Your girl seems to be having a nice time... Wish was in her place 😋😀
@mrks9 "Rock framed landscape" Love the blend of your texture! the little details on the rock! That's 👌
@Ndim_Donald Thanks. The texture is an image used as a mask in Inkscape.
That's a cool series you're laying out @foreverNoob, Expand the art line, you can build an interesting story behind the show...✌
@Ndim_Donald Thank you kindly, sir. That is very good advice!😀
Humor ...
"Putting the pieces together,
So my results come out better."
(Learning Inkscape rhyme or "motto" for today.)

@mako-gfx Fantastic. Thanks for sharing 👍
Walking through the ruins.
@mako-gfx Wow... Excellent work, and thank you for the description of your process. Very interesting! Thank you for your entry and welcome.
Feel free to post more artwork if you like (multiple entries are welcome).
Looking forward to seeing more of your creations (either in this challenge or future challenges).

@mrks9
Another interesting piece. Your silhouettes (as you stated) bring a sense of proportion. Looks mysterious. Thanks for another great entry! :)
Is it too late? Can we still save him?
@mrks9 I really like the finishing touches you did. These details make the rocks really pop out. Its also nice how you faded the light texures with the shapes. Really inspiring!
To me the colour-choice in the final image fits much better than in the earlier version. The yellows and reds fit the mood just perfectly and add a little rock-desert-feeling to it. Nice!
Thanks, @pacer When this challenge started I thought I wouldn't be able to do anything, but something has been coming up 🙂
@mako-gfx Thanks, it's part of the process. The first image is what I manage to do with Inkscape, for the second one I complement it with Gimp or Krita 🎨
Breaking the Idol of Ignorance and Apathy.
(Mainly used Roughen Live Path Effect, Mirror Symmetry Live Path Effect, and the Voronoi Pattern Extension.)
@mrks9 That image is awesome man!
@Paddy_CAD I think this is him. A dragon hatched outside a pub around the same time! The pub's name was promptly changed.
The blame game is broken.
Breaking our trust. The gossip girl.
Didn't want to go on a break for this one.
@mako-gfx ... Just ONE word for your disk..!
That's Dope 💫... the lights, the little spark at the center, the slim layout by adding the borders/outlines for a 3d feel, and the color pallet.
Sure it's a good vibe, Bless up for the good art!!!
***That's definitely not one word though 😅
@mrks9 ... the rings on your spheres. that's surely something I've got to learn from you 🙌👌
Imagination puzzle.
@Ndim_Donald This is how I did it 😉
@mrks9 Dude Where do I find those settings for that sphere?
@foreverNoob Extensions / Render / Wireframe Sphere
@mrks9 much thanks man.. will certainly pop something from this!! 🙏
@Ndim_Donald, @Pacer thanks for your kind words. It encourages me to create more pictures. This Challenge-Style and your feedback helps me a lot.
My attempt at a stained glass picture. From broken pieces, assembled to make a "whole".
@ken10001000
A good look Ken.
@ken10001000 Fantastic effect, Ken 💯
This was more difficult than I thought it would be.
Very good work, bleke. Thank you for sharing this.
Patch work teddy hear. Asking for mercy.
@bleke: This is awesome! Looks very sharp and realistic. Very nice! But please dont break Inkscape. Its such a nice tool😋
@bleke, what did you find was more difficult than expected?
@ken10001000 and @mako-gfx Thank you both! 😊
@TylerDurden Well, not difficult as such but a lot more work than I anticipated.
BulletGlass
In this image I used another method to create the shards. First I created random forms of shards with the polygon-tool.
Then I applied gradients to it. I used these forms with the spray-tool to create more shards with random variation in
size and angle. To achieve the randomized shard-borders I cloned all shards on a new layer. Then I combined all forms and used
"convert strokes to path. Now I could add a "Roughen" effekt on all shard-borders, giving randomness to the border-thickness.
I struggled to draw the splashing liquid, so I decided to keep it simple, cloud-like in this case.
Wow. Amazingly beautiful and creative work, mako-gfx. Thank you.
@mako-gfx Nice image, so dynamic. Thanks for sharing 💯🔨
This effect was the result of a "lucky accident" trying to do something else. Sometimes I love it when plans go wrong 😊
Marcos, the magnificent! Excellent work, accident or not. Thank you for sharing this.
@ken10001000 Thanks, Ken 😉
@mako-gfx Excellent concept. I like how you considered the content of the glass and how it moves as the bullet breaks through.
Thank you for another great entry and thank you for the explanation of your process.
@mrks9 Really interesting design. I love the color combination in the final image. Very dynamic!
@mrks9 reminds me a bit of spiderman, because of the white thin lines on red ground:) Its slightly confusing with all those lines through the Letters but I like that a lot!
Thanks @pacer @mako-gfx Yep, you're right, it's confusing, but I liked the chaotic feel.
It looks like this month's challenge has BROKEN the record for highest interaction. Thank you for supporting each other. What a fantastic group!
Apologies for my rushed artwork. :)
Pacer, very nice artwork. Text under water?
Can you share any in process details?
Thank you @ken10001000
No problem. This is fairly quick.
- Write out some text, convert it to paths and unify it.
- Go to Filters > Distort > Felt Feather
- Tweak the sliders until you are happy with the distortion.
I hope that helps.
@pacer Nice! 👌
Thank you, Pacer, very much.
Okay, "loop hole Ken" is at it again.
A mixture of my nuttiness, experimentation, Voronoi Extension, Mirror Live Path Effects, and Roughen Live Path Effects.
I can be "ghoulish" at times ... in how I respond to the needs of others.
(An experiment in using hatch lines.)
(I just noticed that I repeated "not" in the graphic. Oh, well.)
This is perhaps a work in progress. Not sure if I will continue with it or not. Maybe it will give someone some ideas.
@ken10001000 I like that samurai. It reminds me of the moais on Easter Island. The letters effect on the last one is cool. You could finish the background in the shape of a stained glass window 🙂
Someone once said: "If you have time to be bored, you have time to do something better".
This is the day The Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.
Another attempted stained glass idea, from "broken" pieces. I include the original idea graphic.
Enjoy a great and happy day.
@ken10001000 some fun designs, The Samurai Dentist looks very detailed, good use of a reflecting pattern.
@AlgotRuneman @bleke @doctormo @foreverNoob @ken10001000 @mako-gfx @meetdilip @mrks9 @Ndim_Donald @Paddy_CAD
Heads up everyone! There are still several days remaining for this month's challenge. But the next challenge is emerging. As before, I want to give you all a chance to come up with ideas ahead of time. November's challenge is to........... Draw something in motion 🧨🍃. Challenge banner to follow.

OK, back to the current challenge :)
I couldn't figure out anything else, so I started to play with lines and some transparency and this is what I got.
@pacer You make it harder and harder. That challenge will be hard 😅
@pacer
Sounds fun. :) I had this sketch that I made five years ago that I think would work well for the topic.
@bleke It would... make sure to post it on that challenge page after it goes live (1st Nov).
@pacer I think the image of @bleke looks great as an example of motion, but could you also do something similar to the image I show? made in Inkscape not long ago. Could that represent motion? Another option would be to animate, but I don't know how to do it 😋
@pacer sorry for the last post, I hadn't seen your previous comment.
@mrks9 I would turn off all men except the first and save file1.png, turn off all but second and save file2.png etc.
Then take all files to a site like this one
https://imgflip.com/gif-maker
@mrks9 Don't worry. I'm not fussed about rules. All informal on these challenges.
Regarding animation, if anyone is interested, we can (at some point) look at some basic SVG animation (in a separate thread).
@pacer Thanks. I've tried it in Blender but animating is too technical for me 😊
@bleke That's a great idea, thanks for the tip. Although in this particular case I couldn't because there is a lot of post-production in Gimp and I would have to use a lot of masks, not only in the silhouettes, also in the reflection.
@mrks9

I don't know how to animate in blender (I've never tried), but I do know how to animate (to some degree) using SMIL and CSS. I think you would be surprised how quickly you could get something to move.

WHAT THE F..... Been gone for quite a while (really busy offline 😅) and damn... how crazy some of you have gone in here!!!
@ken10001000 always making a difference with your unique art style! 👌 much appreciation for the consistency!
@mrks9 can see you don't want this challenge to end... man, you've broken a hell lot of things, got to run now!
@mako-gfx hmmm, sniper's eyes, That's a shot 🏃
@bleke Man, Break everything but not our Inkscape bro 💪
@pacer thanks for the challenge to keep sparking our creativity 🙏
Much respect for the great artists in our community!!!
Inkscrape
I really like your design @mako-gfx
An unusual concept, and well executed. The torn edges of the letters are so realistic.If you do get frustrated with anything in the future and want some input from someone else, start a thread in the WIP section and drop me a link. Thank you for another excellent entry!
