As an UI-designer I just would like to understand the logic behind why this is feature is set as it is.

When I would like to use mouse zoom via the wheel only, I have to go to prefs->interface->keyboard->modifiers->canvas-> and remove ctrl from canvas zoom plus add ctrl to pan !?!?!?

This went totally over my head... would really have thought to find something like prefs->interface->mouse plus use mouse zoom etc.

Pls. somebody pls. explain to me WHY this is made up like that ?

You might ask the dev in their channel. This is the user forum.

Since the last update I can't scroll-wheel zoom without any extra key: don't get why this is. Totally goes on my nerves.

The setting must be done as I stated:

prefs->interface->keyboard->modifiers->canvas-> and remove ctrl from canvas zoom plus add ctrl to pan

Then you can zoom, scroll as before. This is missing all normal logics, but this is how somebody thought it should be done.

The modifiers are a new feature that provide extra control over what modifiers to use more generally, and are part of an effort to provide more customizable/stem the complaints in https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inbox/-/issues/2505 .

A simpler setting for mouse scroll was not implemented (actually, the older feature had to be removed because it doesn't work with the above system).

We have a request open for it here: https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inbox/-/issues/4391 We just need a developer to come on a tackle the problem. (wink and nudge to lurking devs interested in helping out 👻)

Sadly the "old" way is not possible, so hopefully all in need of the feature settings can find this post.
