Select the ellipse and go Path->Stroke to Path - you will receive the red ellipse and the oval black shape - select black and red Square and go Path->Difference. You´ll notice the cut off will be smaller due the remaining red ellipse. If you need an exact gap of the black shape you need to duplicate it first - do the Path->Difference thing on the Square and one more time on the red ellipse with the black shape.

My question is about making this:
I have two side-by-side shapes, almost overlapped
I give to the right shape some outlines; after that I would like to subtract the outline part to the left shape.
How can I do?
