I'm trying to offset a simple open path. Think a triangle open at an apex.
I tried "Dynamic offset." All that did is close the opening. Same with "Linked Offset"
Inset and Outset offset closed the path but did go inside and outside. They do not leave the original, and I do not want the path closed.
I work daily with AutoCAD, Rhino, Sketchup and am trying to use Inkcape to replace CorelDRAW. How can this tool be so different from standard applications?
What I want to do is select a Line/Path/Curve whatever, chose offset, and either drag it dynamically or enter a distance. I've watched a couple YT videos be they are no help. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for the response. Offset does not seem to leave the original, so requires I copy and paste "in place". Is this a setting somewhere? On the internal ofset, it does not trim the unwanted corner excess, and I can't figure out how to trim a line/path with itself.

Try another Join like "Extrapolated arc" enable "Force miter" and/or increase Miter limit and yes if you want to keep the original path besides the applied Offset a duplicate is required.
Again, thanks for your responses. Unfortunately, I was taking much to much time to learn the simplest procedures. I reverted to using Rhino to creating the objects and imported into Inkscape for color and layout. I'll put time into this sometime into the future.

I'm on the latest Inkscape 1.3
Please try the LPE "Offset" instead:

There could be a bug in the offset extension.. That's my guess.
