I try to do more in Inkscape and want to refine my knowledge with the tools at my hand. In the example below, I try to combine the two upper left nodes to create a new object. The result should be the green example path object I included on the top.
Is this possible with default path node tools? Or what would be a good way to achieve that in general?

Wow, that is perfect. Both versions worked for me and I can see the potential for different use cases.
In this case I chose to go with the second approach. I could keep the original "frame" as a reference and created all new objects. This is the result:
