Beginners' Questions print problem

I was using 0.92.3 great for 6 months, but it suddenly would freeze up when I clicked print and I would have to remove the battery on laptop to restart.  I decided to download 0.92.4 and it did the same thing, freeze up when I cliced print. This morning it worked fine for 2 prints, but now it isn't printing the correct size. I have 11x17 paper, inkscape is set to 11x17, printer is set to 11x17 but it is printing too far right and only half the design page. I can print from other programs fine.  I am 63, don't know the jargen so would need a simply worded explanation as to how to fix. Any ideas? Thank you

    Welcome to the forum!

I would advise not to remove the laptop battery, ever!  Removing the laptop battery at the wrong time (for example, while the computer is running) could break the computer.  Holy crap, I wouldn't even know how to remove the battery of my laptop!

If Inkscape freezes, you can simply close it and restart it.  Worst case scenario, you could restart the computer.  But never remove the battery unless some licensed and bonded professional tells you to.

If Inkscape is freezing, there's a good chance you're working with an image that is too large.  Printing only part of the page is another symptom of a too large image.  Do you know how large the image is?  Or do you know how to find out how large it is?

Once the program froze there was no way to close it, exit inkscape, or to restart computer..even ctrl alt delete to bring up windows manager so yes removing battery was only way to restart..like I stated it froze.  The design was a simple 300dpi image print size was 3.14" high by 3" wide. Definitely not large. It will print but only half the image it's like it is reading it as 1.5" and prints off the paper which is 11x17. I tried other saved files and they print the same half and off page.

Well yeah, there are other ways to handle a frozen program, including closing it and restarting the computer.  Frankly, I've never heard of removing the battery as a way to handle any problem with the computer.  If Ctrl-Alt-Del didn't work, that would mean the whole computer was frozen.  And that likely would not have anything to do with Inkscape.  Well, not unless it's a fairly old computer.

Back to Inkscape.  Is the entire image inside the page border?

I don't do much printing, so I'm not familiar with the settings. It's 11 x 17 paper and 3 inch images?  Do you mean it's printing off center?  Or only half the image is on the paper?  Attached is a scale drawing of what I understand you're saying.  An 11 x 17 paper with half of a pinkish 3 inch image?

Yes inkscape froze up my whole laptop, no closing it, waiting a bit opening it would unfreeze, it did nothing, removing battery was only way. Laptop does not freeze up using other programs such as PagePlus by Affinity and prints fine through PP also so definitely an inkscape problem.

Design was centered on page I will attach photos of how it printed. One is usable one is not.

Wow. Agree you shouldnt need to pull the battery.  Usually the trick for me is to hold down the on/off button for about 30+ seconds until it reboots. Sometimes have to do that a few times before it reboots.

I think you are printing portrait when it should be landscape (or vice versa).

Can you try changing it and printing again?  I suspect when it didnt fit the printer sent your pc internal error  notices which overwhelmed the memory perhaps, I'm not a pc guru though (and I'm  old as the dinosaurs too, Haha).

If you want to attach the svg should my idea not work, I'd be happy to try to print it myself.

Also, be sure you've set your printer's settings to vector (vs bitmap), usually it's a setting under advanced or optional settings (via your printing screen,  not physically on the printer). If set wrong that might be freezing it too.

Both printer and inkscape pages are set to portrait as you can see in the pics attached one is screen one of print. I'm baffled. I can and did save this export it, opened in PP hit print and it printed perfectly. My objective is to be able to do both design and print through inkscape again lol

I'd try saving a copy as PDF and printing the copy from Adobe Reader.

I'm saving and printing thru PagePlus but it defeats the purpose of using inkscape at all lol thanks

Interesting.  It does say vector.  But it's on 'best photo'.  Wonder if changing to text or image might render better (can't hurt to try at this point).  Looks like you're printing from a phone? possibly a Wifi? If so, to be honest, that setup 'sounds' great, but I have better luck using a pc or laptop.   (BTW I used to get the issues you had back when I used v .48).  I know it's only happening in Inkscape, but that alone doesn't make it an inkscape issue (could be a memory caching  issue).  I'm out of ideas, and would suggest that you also find an official forum for whatever printer you have, they may be better at troubleshooting, or have other ideas, at least the more heads put together might spark an idea.  If at all possible, I would try to print via a direct setup between a pc and printer, if that works, then you'll know it's either the wifi or using a phone to print from.  Sorry can't help more, hopefully someone else will come along that might be better versed in printing issues.

Then just use your old PagePlus or buy Affinity Design. Problem solved.

Well I can't afford affinity nore do I want to learn a new program at my age.

I really thought I could get an answer here how to fix the print problem lol

    Guess not

Printing is not Inkscape's strong suit.  We often suggest saving as PDF and using a PDF reader to print from.  Most people have a PDF reader.

That said, I notice one of your images, you have selected "Best Photo".  It looks like one of the options is Text and Image.  Since that is actually what you're printing, I'd probably try that.  I have no idea if that would solve the problem.  But I'd try it.

For the 2 images which have an image "To My Daughter".  I can see that one of them is printed only half on the page.  But the other image which looks like Inkscape, it looks like there's a lot more in the file, than just that image.  So I ask once again, how large is the file?  Even though you may only want to print one image in the file, if the file is too large, it could freeze Inkscape.  And if it's an older computer, it could freeze not just Inkscape, but the whole computer.

Since you already mentioned exporting a PNG and printing it in another program, try this.  Import that same PNG into a brand new Inkscape document, which has nothing else in it.  Then try to print.

It looks like redneon is assembling a page full of various graphics to print on tabloid size paper, then cutting all the images apart ("ganging"). It does not look like there is much vector editing.

Maybe Scribus would be a better choice of software, considering they are coming from PagePlus, an early DTP from Serif.

So perhaps he's mixing svg's with bitmap and that could cause it all to crash.  Def recommend printing only one item of one type per document.

redneon. you can download a free adobe (PDF) reader, or update it if need be.

There are known issues when printing clipped/masked objects, especially in combination with raster content.

This is especially true for Windows, as Inkscape uses cairo's print back-end, which is effectively unmaintained on Windows.

Brynn, I can't lower the setting since I am doing sublimation and need the best photo to get good prints. I did try as you suggested and opened a new file, set document properties,  imported the saved png and it printed the same way,  only half the image again off the right side of paper. Kind of baffles me how it printed so well for 6 months with no issues.  I have since gone thru all my saved inkscape files and saved all the images separate on a F drive and deleted them out of the inkscape file so there is just a single image there. Hopefully that will stop any freezing up in the future.  I had no clue I couldn't save a lot of png images within one document since that is how PP saves.  I guess I will just go back to using PP which is disappointing.  Thanks to those who tried to help

It seems there is little need for vector editing in this workflow.

More appropriate free options are GIMP (better than Photoshop, IMO) and Scribus (true DTP with CMYK process). These open-source projetcs are well supported, regularly updated, with millions of users worldwide.

    Have a nice day.

Just to let you know that my print problems have been resolved. I uninstalled 0.92.4, deleted it and downloaded and reinstalled 0.92.3 and have printed 3 items successfully. I assume that there is some sort of bug in the newer 0.92.4 version
