I'm on a MacBook running 10.15.7 (Catalina), running Inkscape for Mac 1.2.2 (b0a8486, 2022-12-01).
My Backspace is my Delete key in every application but Inkscape, and I tried to set it to be the Delete key in Inkscape. As the Beginner's Manual says, however, "Pressing Backspace will reset the shortcut to its default value."
Is there some way that I can have the Backspace key as my Delete key? If so, how?
I have a keyboard I like, other than Delete. It's just that one key. Because in the keyboard mapping Preferences the key I want to assign has another purpose, I don't see how I can use those processes to change that key.
I'll look again, but I posted because I couldn't find a solution in the documentation. In fact, the first link you give is the article I quoted in my original post.
Okay, those don't help. The second link, as far as I can tell, just lists the defaults. The first, as I said, is the one I quoted and why I posted. If I click on the Detele key entry, I get the "New Reference" signal, but if I then hit the Backspace key (the method for selecting it), Inkscape just restores the default setting rather than changing it to that key.

Hi. Look at

And also

Maybe the Delete key by itself is "hard-wired" for it's own specific purpose.
And maybe someone else can help you.
Yes, the first link I shared tells you how to set your own keyboard shortcuts. The second link gives list of currently assigned keyboard shortcuts.
