    Welcome to the forum!

Hhmm....  Would you please give us some additional info?

For example, why are you downloading a gcode file?  What do you want to do with it?  What are you trying to add it to?  Why?

Typically, we see Inkscape being used to create gcode files, which would then be sent to some kind of cutter.  I have not heard of downloading a gcode file, although I guess you could.  But then you would not need Inkscape, you would just send it to your cutting machine.

    Could you clarify a bit?

I oppologize, as I misspoke. What I meant to say was that I cannot get inkscape to allow me to add the extension that it needs to make gcode files.

I try to follow these instructions with an extension from "Makerbot Unicorn Penplotter".   To install a new extension, download and unpack the archive file. Copy the files into the directory listed at Edit > Preferences > System: User extensions. After a restart of Inkscape, the new extension will be available But the program doesn't allow anything to be added where they tell you to.

I am planning to make signs on a cnc, but I can't get the extension into the program that it needs to make the gcode files.

    Thank you.

Oh ok.  I can give you more simplified instructions for installing an extension.  However, I should tell you that the Makerbot Unicorn extension is reported to have been discontinued.  That means it will no longer be developed for newer versions of Inkscape (and only works under certain conditions, in the current version), and if you have any problems with it, the author will not be able to help.  Neither will we.

I'm curious.  We have people pretty much constantly reporting that they are using that extension (and often the reports are, that it doesn't work).  Where have you learned that this is the proper extension to use for your project?

(I have a suspicion that there may be a popular tutorial somewhere which is promoting it.  But since it's been discontinued, and if it's true that there's a tutorial promoting it, I'd like to try and contact the author of that tutorial and let them know.)

Maybe we can help you find a better gcode extension to use?

You need to open the directory that is listed there with your file browser, and then put the extension files there. Inkscape only tells you the directory name.
