File menu > Document Properties > Page tab.ย At the very top, change Display Units.ย You might also want to change the units for the page size (if they didn't already change), which is about halfway down the same page.
But whatever you do, don't touch the Scale setting!ย If you already changed the Scale setting, you'll need to fix it.ย Let us know and we can tell you how.
I have Inkscape 1.0 for the Mac. ย Every time I open the program it defaults back to mm. I have to change it every time. ย Is there a new way with 1:0 to have it default to inches?
I have a problem with doing this as I have looked all down the file menu I can't see an option to save as template.
As there doesn't appear to be a way to share my screenshot here I'll list the options I have by text New New From Template... Open... Open Recent Revert Save Save As... ...and that's all she wrote.
I'm using version 0.92 of Inkscape on Windows 10 and have tried it in both normal and admin mode.
Changing the display units in the Document settings doesn't solve the problem, because it doesn't change the units being used by individual tools. For example, I started a new document and changed the display units to inches, but when I go to adjust the stroke on an object, it still shows millimeters. You have to change the units manually with each tool you decide to use. There should be a tab in Preferences that allows you to set these units globally, but alas it is not so.
How can I make inches the default measurement?

Make your changes to the settings you like to have at start and go File->Save Templateโฆ and check where it says: Set as default template.
That should do it.
