Beginners' Questions Installation of extension "dimensioning"

    Arthur Arthur @Arthur_9

    Hello,

I would like to use the extension "dimensioning". I copied the two files as descibed (Pic1 & Pic2). Then I restarted the program, but the extension cannot be found (Pic3). I have tried this with the newest version as well as with Inkscape 0.92.

Would be so great to find your help and possibly a solution to my problem.

    Thanking you,

    Arthur

    Note

The extension has been moved to the folder create from path -> Dimensioning

    Hi.

    Very new to Inkscape (excuse).

I had also put dimensioning.inx & dimensioning.py in the same folder as Arthur @ post 1 above

    (Edit: actually in Win10 folder

    C:\Users\Lauren\Appdata\Roaming\inkscape\extensions)

and was hoping the dimensioning tool would appear someplace in some menu.

Howerver, after restart, I can't see any reference to the tool in any menu.

    So, when the Note says:

The extension has been moved to the folder create from path -> Dimensioning

Does that mean I have to move dimensioning.inx & dimensioning.py to some other folder (I can't, after a search in the Inkscape directories easily see one called "create from path" / "Dimensioning")

    ?

Probably a silly question but, if that is correct - which one?

If I do get the two files into the correct folder, how then do I "see/activate" the dimensioning functionality within the user interface?

    Thanks, in anticipation.

The extension seems to be broken in Windows.

A better solution might be in Menu: Path>Path Effects>Measure segments.

    Thanks for your comment Tyler.

Do you mean you'd expect to see, er, something related to the DIMENSIONING extension in my screenshot "PATH EFFECTS.PNG"?

Please also see screenshots of my system preferences and contents of C:\Users\Lauren\Appdata\Roaming\inkscape\extensions.

If that is all in order, rather than trying a different operating system, is there anything else I could try?

It helps to apply the Measure segments effect, using the dropdown menu in the Path Effects dialog:

BTW, you can attach images using the paperclip button, or drag & drop in the reply textarea.

    @ Tyler.

    Another, um, silly question?

your screenshot of yesterday displays the selected path width of 409.91 (mm?) with scale set at 1.0.

On that basis the path length must, surely, be > 409.91 (mm?).

However, your path dimension displays as 110.57mm.

Is there a straightforward explanation to the dimension displayed compared to that which I had expected?

I probably had my document units set for px, but the path effect units were set to mm.

    Ah, OK.

My path effect units related to the following screenshot image are also mm - I didn't know, until you mentioned it, about the document units but assume that is what is shown here.

The scale (mm per user unit) is stated as 0.264583 (no idea how/where that number came into being).

The horizontal leg of the path has dimension line value stated as 848.49mm.

    So,

    0.264583 x 848.49 = 224.49mm

Using the node tool to locate the start of that leg gives  x  = 110.938 and end at 335.435 => Diff = 224.49 so, at least, I know where those numbers come from.

Anyway, it's obvious that I really need to get stuck into Inkscape in detail to avoid drawing a disaster 😁

Thanks again for your comments Tyler - they've, hopefully, pointed me in the right direction.
