I almost feel embarrassed asking this question however I can't find any examples on YouTube, or google on how to draw a straight line in inkscape. This is what I tried :
1. Click on the pen tool. (Looks like an ink pen) 2. Draw the line from left to right, double clicking the right end point.
This almost works, however I will get either a blank line, or a line which looks more like a wedge.
Open fill and stroke panel (ctrl + shift + F or menu object > Fill and Stroke), tab Stroke paint and set a color fill (icon Flat color, next to the cross).
Inkscape remembers last style applied, you can right click on bezier tool icon.to change this setting.

Note that the Bezier pen can have a fill assigned and that open paths will display fills.
A slight move when finishing a line with double-click can make an extra node slightly off-line that shows the fill.
