@Polygon I agree that your solution with the line and then make the stroke really thick and rounded endpoints is best. The allows one to later adjust the heart shape. Important is to make sure to use node alignments to distribute the three points with equal distance and align the two top points.
The rounding of the top is not good, because if you pull the handles down further, it does not stop in the middle and you get a weird shape. I think that is possibly a bug in Inkscape?
Drawing a perfect heart shape with Inkscape is not difficult.
