Beginners' Questions Trying to Break Apart Path, turns into a black blob?

    I have one single path (the words "sun's out buns out")-when I break apart the path, I should get individual letters. Instead, when I break apart the path, I get a massive black blobΒ shape. What should I do to fix this? I've attached screenshots.Β
