Could you please help me understand why the "select same behaves like select all" in Preferences -> Behaviour -> Selecting setting might not be working as expected?
I’ve tested it on three different laptops (Windows 10 and 11) with three Inkscape versions (1.4.1, 1.3.2, and 1.2.x). I've noticed that when I select all (Ctrl+A), it correctly selects only within the active layer. However, when I try to select text objects within the same layer (Shift+Alt+A), it ends up selecting all text objects across all layers, regardless of the "Select Same Behaves Like Select All" setting.
Could I ask if the "Select Same Behaves Like Select All" setting works for you?
Are there any other ways to select all text objects within a specific layer without manually locking all other layers?
I did'nt fully experiment but I understand from inkscape preferences that if you enable the option, select same will behave the way you set the behavior of select all (one of the three options within red rectangle). That doesn't work for you ? See png
Notice that current layer doesn't always mean the layer of the object you right clic > select same. It's the layer highlighted in objects panel : on the gif below, I review all ellipses : their stroke color matches the layers color. Then I select two ellipses on different layers, but Layer one is highlighted : only the ellipses of layer one are selected.
Thank you so much for your response—and especially for the GIF! It really helps to clarify what’s happening with Inkscape, and I truly appreciate the effort you put into creating it.
I believe I’m following the same steps as you, but the results are a bit different on my end. For instance, my settings are:
"Select only within current layer" for selecting all
"Select the same behaves as select all" for "Select the Same"
After pressing Ctrl+A twice, only objects in Layer 2 are selected, as seen in the GIF. However, when I choose text within Layer 2 (with Layer 2 highlighted in the object panel), all text objects across all layers get selected instead.
I've tested this on three different Windows machines, so I'm wondering if the issue could be related to the OS.
Thanks again for your help, and I wish you all the best!
