I've got a svgz file (that I didn't make) and it seems to use the private-use area of Unicode, even for regular charaters. They're encoded like  for example. When I view the file using the built-in quicklook viewer in MacOS 10.13.6, everyone looks fine, as it does if I view the file in Safari. However if I open the file in Inkscape, those characters are not correctly displayed. Instead they show up as what I think are Chinese characters. I can hand edit the file in BBEdit to replace those characters (though it's very tedious) and then they show up just fine, though the font changes at some point.

As far as I can tell, this is an html file. I can't open it with Inkscape. It has an image in it - a blue/white checkerboard with thin diagonal black lines. But I don't see any text or unicode-looking characters. In a text editor, I can see that the file is full of scripts. That's all I can offer.... 🙁
@brynn I think your browser might be doing something wrong. That's the correct link for the file. I too get a checkerboard view, but then it moves on to allow me to download the file.
It's a legit SVG file, but I'm not sure anything can be done in Inkscape to read fonts embedded in the defs. I don't see anything in the new version to address it either.
What's interesting to me is that the macOS quicklook system is able to handle it without any problem. I have no idea how hard this is, but it seems like it might be worth making inkscape capable.

Any other way around this?
Can you share the file?
Voilà. And here's a DropBox link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/9goq8ignrme7o3p/unicode_problem.svgz

Edit: Thanks for the link. We'll take a look.

Ok yeah, I got it this time. Unfortunately, I can't help with the problem. But someone else should be along pretty soon.
