Thank you for approving the post, it was my 4th attempt.ย The other three failed and I tried again after you approved by 4th post and it failed again.
I replied to you twice in email but not sure if it goes anywhere so I will copy my two messages here.ย It would be cool if there was some way to patch the product so it does not convert text in the import to microscopic size while it shows the basic text at correct size in the preview thumbnail.
I am going to try using an older windows version soon but see no reason for it to behave differently unless that part of the code which seems to rarely trigger has been damaged in recent code changes.

Loading PDF to edit hides most text with "font-size: 1e-32px;"
Hi All,
I just created this account to post this message. I would rather have added my observation onto one of the bugs but GitLab insists on linking a phone number and possibly a credit card (I don't have one) to my email address that I agreed to when registering.ย They have performed a sinister bait and switch because they have issues and are possibly preparing to leak all the data pairs one day with a so called breach.
So if one is using Inkscape on a non Latin operating system the import of a PDF file may fail by hiding all the text.ย Inspection of the XML shows a characteristic (but mentioned only ONCE on the internet) error in the import yet the preview thumbnail is not affected by the bug and does display the text.
This is very, very small and not visible though if you select the text in the object list it does get selected and it is possible to EDIT the XML value or ADD Inkscape text styling to the element and it will be displayed. When viewing the XML we see the Inkscape styling is added to the text-id object but the damaged styling is in one of the tags one level down but before the text string.
My case is not a non-Latin OS, a pretty vanilla MacOS 15.3 with US and/or UK, FIN settings. I loaded the latest stable InkScape onto my colleagues laptop so they could try and edit a single PDF file.ย There seems to be few open-source PDF editors that will allow actual real editing.ย While all the lines and embedded graphic show up correctly on Inkscape the loss of text makes it unusable.ย If there was a way to parse a PDF and hack it so this bug was not triggered then I suppose that would be fine. ,,,,, ย
Also the funny thing was that in my case one text string out of about 60 strings was displayed correctly.ย Also I am not sure if the bold styling was lost or if a bold font was used but when I edit the error in the XML file for font-size the text is correctly displayed but the weight is not.
A very similar fault is discussed in the following GitLab error that is just over a year old. gitlab . com/inkscape/inkscape/-/issues/4845
I regret that I am unable to provide a sample file until I can edit out the customer details and this would require a working PDF editor.
===== It seems to be working, I find it hard to believe I can only post a couple of paragraphs at a time.

Thank you that is very useful advice but it has limits when discovered late.
The link you offer is almost enough I suppose for a new user in the USA to get the job done right.
The last comment suggests linking expeditiously through the InkScape project page on GitLab to join the project.
However there are 3 (4) problems
First, if you have tried to sign up previously your email is forever trapped in their system as a potential free trial customer and it does not allow you to join again as a project participant even if you pick a new user name.
If you use a new username and new email address it continues with the request for a phone number after verifying the email at least for me in Finland.
These instructions should be pinned in a guide in the forum and in a welcome message to the forum with an apology that an earlier attempt of joining GitLab incorrectly may have sacrificed a primary email address.
The suggestion to attempt joining the project from the InkScape project page by using the blue button in the top right is hard to execute as this button is labelled the default "Get free trial" which prefers the data mining instead of the "Join a project" that has not done so in the past.
Large corporations do not see a downside cost to data mining and inconveniencing small projects that have freedom and privacy longing goals is considered collateral damage or malicious compliance of self declared charity by design.ย The internet was made to be free and fault tolerant yet the prevailing systems relentlessly work to engineer that there would be no freedom of thought or speech and will gladly use any means possible to fingerprint every person from multiple directions.ย This is not done to achieve lawful goals or there would no longer be unlawfulness.ย It is done to further data mining for nefarious purposes such as linking anonymous utterances of whistleblowers and researchers to people that can then be targeted.ย Much like famous and influential people are targeted by having dirt on them from Epstein or Diddi lists.ย This dirt will not be published by those that know because it prevents the use for blackmail.ย In the same way personal details collected on the internet will not be used to catch criminals, it will instead be used to harness criminals and chill the speech of honest people.
I might try again using a VPN but find that stooping low enough to play their games is not very rewarding.
The powers govern by the consent of the governed, if we accept curbs on out freedoms they will curb them.
