And I realized there will be a note at the bottom of the screen saying "drag to continue path from this point, when the cursor is over the box. It's otherwise hard to tell if you've been precise enough.

When your mouse is over the tiny box, it gets bigger and turns red. At least it does for me on Windows. I assume it does for everyone?
Hhmm, I see that at least in 0.92.3, the status bar gives a misleading clue for the Pencil tool. Rather than "Drag to continue..." it should say the same thing as the Pen tool "Click or click and drag...."
