I would like to trace a jpg image to turn it into SVG. I have tried many different files (selected "all files" or explicitly "jpg, jpeg" from import menu) and always get the message

"Failed to load the reqquested file"

For example, this file:

Works as expected here; simple dragged it onto open Inkscape canvas or right-click at Gooogle tell copy - then paste into opened Inkscape document.

I am using Version Inkscape 1.3.1 (9b9bdc1480, 2023-11-25, custom) and you?

All recents - right now 1.4beta. Never had a problem with loading/placing/open image files in/with Inkscape.

This is the reason: I am on Linux Ubuntu and installed Inkscape with snap. It lacks permissions to do anything. To fix, uninstall from snap and install "the proper way".

sudo snap remove inkscape

then install the 'real' Inkscape program from the ppa, following the instructions here:
