I use the node tool to light up all the nodes on a path, then use it again : drag a box to select a subset of nodes,
then the tut saysย Ctrl -Alt-LeftClick to delete them.
Click where? I can only delete one at a time.
Help says " (Backspace, Delete, or Ctrl+Alt+Left Mouse Click): Delete selected nodes. " . That doesn't happen.
How is " You can add nodes anywhere on a path by either double clicking or by Ctrl+Alt+click at the desired location." compatible with "You can delete nodes with Del or Ctrl+Alt+click." unless it means one at a time?
I'm sure it has worked (deleted a group) a couple of times but I don't know why.
I know I can hit Delete but my hand's on the mouse...

Similarly Auto smooth only works on one node at a time. Is that all it does? ย
After you highlight the nodes (the ones you want to delete), you can just delete them.ย You can either use the Delete key on the keyboard or right-click > Delete (or Edit menu > delete).ย To my knowledge, and if you have the right option selected in Preferences, Delete tries to preserve the shape of the path.ย Ctrl + delete will make the path straight in the area where the selected nodes were.
I'm not familiar with Ctrl + Alt + click.ย Yeah, that behaves exactly like you describe.ย If the mouse is not on a node, it simply deselects the nodes.ย If the mouse is over a node, it deletes only that node.
Try either delete, or Ctrl + delete.ย Either of those should work for you.
Which Help were you looking at where you found Ctrl + Alt + click?ย I don't see that in the manual, but I might not be looking at the same thing you looked at.
Edit
Oh, I just realized you might be talking about controls for editing when the transform handles are enabled and in use.ย Do you know if you have the transform handles enabled?
If you do, you will see the same appearance for selected nodes, as you see with the Selection tool and any selected object (scale and rotation arrows).ย When they are enabled for the Node tool, there are slightly different ways of removing nodes.
I'm missing something basic.

Thanks I'll dig and come back - it takes so long....!
This is the part of the manual about editing paths (in all ways).ย http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths-Editing.html
Thanks. This was the bit I had read about ย ย > Ctrl + Alt + click <
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths-Editing.html#Paths-Editing-Node
Ctrl F toย ย Using the Node Tool-Tool Controls
and it's 2 spots below the box. ( I couldn't see how to post a screenshot)
ย
Basically, I need to work my way through ALL the help files :)
