I have been trying to create a tiled sequence which climbs at 45 degrees with each tile just touching. I have tried a whole range of x and y shifts but cannot get it to work the attached picture shows best result todate

    Hi John.

    What works here is this:

PP thanks again for the prompt response. The effect I am trying to create is where the rectangles are aligned at 45 as per your lower diagram but the space between the rectangles has been reduced to zero ie they are abutting. I had managed to get to your lower diagram but could not close the gaps and retain the 45 degree alignment. Is the measurement for the x and y spacing taken from the guideline intersection ie leftmost corner of the sloping rectangle? if yes then I would have thought the minus displacement of x and y would be the vertical and horizontal height of top square ie sine 45 x width of rectangle but that did not work for me, any thoughts? Once I can get the tiling right I am going to introduce a pattern into the squares to create a Turkish Tazhib chain pattern

    Maybe this will help along:

PP again thanks for the further explanation. I can now duplicate the sequence and understand why the displacements are what they are. The only thing that is still unclear is what the figures w=13,2292, h=13,2292 represent?

You can ignore them. In the tiled clones dialog you can either define the number of rows and columns, or define the width/height of the area to fill. In this case PP has selected the "Rows, columns" option, so the values in the "Width, height" line aren't used.

These values seems a left-over from a previous attempt using Tiled clones as it appearsย every timeย I start this function automatically - same for other values which donยดt reset after quitting Inkscape - which I like personally.
