When opening a PDF in Inkscape that i have saved from Inkscape, there is parts of it missing. When the PDF Import Settings pop up displays, everything looks correct. When it comes up into Inkscape there are a lot of things missing. I tried to paste what I am talking about with no success. What am I doing wrong?
Thank you for your reply. I am currently on Inkscape 0.92.1 on a Windows 10. Not sure why I didn't pick up on the paper clip? I have attached them.
It has been a long time since I used a drawing program, but relatively new to Inkscape, I get the basic idea just can't seem to make it do exactly what I want.
I still have the drawing opened up in Inkscape (Drawing in Inkscape). I opened a new document and copied over before I saved it to a PDF. The other two are self explanatory.
I see what you mean. It's strange that the pdf preview shows a perfect image before dropping certain shapes. I haven't seen this before and I've no idea what's happening.
Can you upload the pdf? I'll test if I can open it on my machine.
As you can see I am on my 8th version of this image. I have copy and pasted, completely re drawn the whole thing and if I import it to my Adobe Illustrator it does the same thing. Every version in both. I have saved it as a SVG several times and ONE of them saved with the drawing complete BUT there is more than one layer of not all but some of the components(?) of it. Well I guess I'm glad that it wasn't something simple that I was doing wrong but then again it is about like going to the doctor, "We have never seen your ailment before" LOL
I see that @TylerDurden beat me to it. I suppose that's what happens when you treat yourself to a lazy weekend.
As Tyler said, all the objects are present but several are hidden from view by masks. You didn't lose your work, you magically and mysteriously made it invisible. You can use [View > Display Mode > Outline] to reveal these hidden entities or use [View > Split View Mode] as an alternative. This overrides all formatting attributes and shows you the raw geometry beneath. Once I saw the outlines, I restored the concealed objects by selecting everything [ctrl+a] and then ungrouping [ctrl+shift+g] repeatedly. This removed any masks applied to the groups and subgroups and revealed the shapes within.
The same problem can occur when objects are formatted as transparent (0% opacity), or with no stroke and no fill. In the normal view you just can't see them.
Lastly, outline view won't show you any objects in a hidden layer so that's another place to look for missing objects. Open the layer dialog [Layer > Layers...] and then check that layer visibility (the "eyeball" icon) is switched on.
Thank you both for replying and for the help! I have plenty to digest for this fix before I send it over to the printer for the wrap on the racecar. So, just so I am clear, this was not from me saving it incorrectly as a PDF but done while I was creating it?
It's likely that the pdf format created the problem. Or it might have been you, but I'm trying to let you off the hook.
The pdf file format is very different to svg so translating from one to the other inevitably means that some information will be lost or modified or approximated. Importing and exporting pdf and other formats aims to provide an acceptable graphical equivalent and this is rarely an exact copy. When you open a pdf, Inscape translates this to svg for you to edit. As you move back and forth between the two formats, errors can accumulate, eventually leading to a mess that can't be displayed in Inkscape or Acrobat. Or sometimes not.
That's why it's recommend that you keep your work in Inkscape's native svg format if possible, exporting snapshots to other formats when needed.
I know this is an old thread, and I'm relatively new to Inkscape, so forgive me please. But I'm having much of the same with an .svg of a Christmas tree I'm working on. I have saved as a .pdf but when i open this in Reader or look at the preview pane some of the circles are missing. I have tried checking the outline view and everything shows up. I don't have any clips set (that I remember) but there are a lot of separate circles that I grouped together. The .png and .jpg of same look perfect. Only saving it as .pdf is problematic, and i need to send the file to others as .pdf. Can anyone help? TIA
melee: It seems that the svg filters in your drawing didn't translate well to pdf. However, when I export your svg file, the star and shiny baubles all rendered correctly. In the pdf save options, make sure you have selected [Rasterize filter effects]. This converts all filtered shapes to bitmaps which are then embedded in the pdf file.
Thanks a lot for responding. I did have the rasterize selected, and I noticed that it was mostly the ones that had the filters on them that didn't work properly. When I DEselected that option, they converted to a filter-less circle but at least all showed up in the graphic. That will have to suffice unless you have any other ideas. I appreciate your time and help.

Below the text window you'll see a paperclip icon. Use this to include an image with your post.
I regularly import pdf files into Inkscape and I haven't noticed any lost shapes. I'm interested to see your example.
Paddy,

Paddy,
Here is another version of it I saved,
Sorry, I didn't attach the end results
The objects are all there. They need to be ungrouped and any clips removed.
It is commonly advised to only edit the SVG version(s) and save a copy as PDF for release/print.

PS that's what weekends are for!

I'll go with the pdf format creating the problem so I can sleep at night. lol
Thanks again!

Note that gradients can be used instead of filters in this case, so all objects can remain vector.

@TylerDurden
very good point. I'll change that and then save the pdf version that way so at least you get the same sort of effect. Thanks very much.
