Using Inkscape 1.2.2 in a clean install of UbuntuStudio 24.04 LTS.
I work with a right hand nav bar displaying the list 'Layers and objects'. When I click on a layer to edit a group of objects, the group appears to be selected but when I use any method to ungroup the objects for editing, the layer disappears from the listing. Even if I click first on the group.
In the meantime, the group of objects displayed doesn't get ungrouped. It takes a Ctrl-Z to get the layer back in the layer and objects listing.
My workaround is to select the layer, click anywhere on the layer outside the grouped objects, then click on the grouped objects, then use one of the methods to ungroup them.
This does not correspond with previous experience on earlier versions of Inkscape.
Another weird thing about the display of the layers list, is that the layer worked on sometimes changes its position in the list at random and then has to be replaced in the desired position.
Thanks Tyler. I tried but ended up with the latest 1.4.0 and confirm that it behaves just the same as my old 1.2.2.
I went to the link you suggested and followed the instructions for the command line. It installed the ppa but it installs the latest stable version.
How can I specify the 1.3.2 version?
OK- I found the answer. It involves changing the command line to sudo add-apt-repository ppa:inkscape.dev/stable-1.3
Sadly, when it came to installing 1.3, I got messages about missing dependencies that were unavailable for download. That all got a little too complicated so I decided to stay with 1.4 since I can manage to avoid losing the layer listing.

Surely this behaviour is not as planned?
I think this was fixed in 1.3.2, then broken again in 1.4.0.
I'd uninstall Inkscape and delete the user profile (~/.config/inkscape/).
Then, I'd try installing 1.3.2 using the PPA: https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.3.2/gnulinux/ubuntu/ppa/dl/
