Beginners' Questions Stuck in "square" mode

This is going to sound stupid but I've been using Inkscape for a while, truly not understanding it but managing to do a few simple tasks. I now find myself needing to draw a simple circle but I seem to be stuck in "square" mode. I click on the circle tool and the hold the mouse key down and drag it. I keep getting a square or rectangle. The cursor shows an ellipse as it should be I can't make a circle. I went so far as to uninstall the latest version thinking something was wrong and re-installed an older version but nothing helps. Can anybody give me an idea what I have done to get myself in this fix? I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Personally, I'd try resetting the preferences.

Thanks Tyler but could you elaborate on that? I have looked at preferences but I don't see anything that would have anything to do with my situation. Unless I'm not understanding what all the options are. If you could fill me in, I'd be most appreciative. Thanks.

Hello again. After reading further, I figured out that I had to update to the newer version in order to reset preferences and figured out what was wrong. Thank you. Is there a way to create a "new user" so as to have preferences that differ from what I had already made that are now in a config file?

"Reset Preferences" should do that for you. If that´s not working in Prefs->System is a path to the user config file (which now is the "preferences.xml in 1.2beta I guess) you can delete so Inkscape will generate a new one after restart if that´s what you want.

The location of the User configuration folder will vary depending on OS and how Inkscape was installed.
