Beginners' Questions Replace solid segment with dashes

    Hi everyone,

This is no doubt a 'newbie' question, so i'm hoping someone can resolve for me!

I am creating a pop-up card so I need to create both solid paths as well as dashed ones (for perforated folds in cardstock)

When I try to break the path or delete a segment (prior to drawing bezier for the replacement dashed line), the colour fill jumps to a node the other side of my design.
I simply cannot figure out why.  I have been able to do others, just not this one.

I hope the screenshot attached shows the issue 'before and after'.

Any help and/or advice very gratefully received!

It's due to svg fill rules.

I would Edit>Copy on your cow.

Then Edit>Paste in place. Now you have two cows perfectly aligned.

Set the fill on the upper cow to none, and set the stroke on the flow cow to none. Left click the lower cow, then right click the lower cow > Lock selected objects.

Now you have a locked lower cow with fill only which is not editable ( until you unlock it ) and an upper cow with stroke only which is selectable.

Quickly using the node tool, select all the break point nodes on the upper cow, press Shift+b to break, then F1, click the upper cow, press Ctrl+Shirt+k.

Now you can Shift Left click each dashed area, and set to dashed.

That's how I would do it.

    @inklinea  haha yes 2 elephants.

I followed your steps - thank you.
I still didn't manage to resolve the fill issue, however I found that despite it looking awful in Inkscape, it uploads to the cutting software perfectly!
(No doubt I still didn't quite do it right though)

    Thanks again 😊

In this case, you should completely and strictly separate the contour and the color fill. By the way, I would use "Duplicate". I can't really judge what the result should look like. Honestly.

@Polygon  sorry, i'm such a newbie.  What do you mean by 'contour'?
Thankfully it seems to upload into the cutting program with no issues at all.  Just threw me why it was throwing the path so randomly!

I meant separate Stroke and Fill to different objects.
