I was using the rectangle tool with no problem, specifying the line width, colour, etc., and filling with colour. Then suddenly it stopped working and won't now draw the line element, only the fill. Now it produces a dashed line with handles which then disappear as soon as I click elsewhere.
Perhaps you set the stroke paint to "none", or set the stroke paint to transparent (opacity = 0), or set the stroke width to zero, or set the stroke colour same as the fill colour or background colour.
As you can see, there are many ways to lose a stroke.
Yes, display mode was normal. And yes, I had checked stroke colour, line width, opacity. None of those worked. But then suddenly it seemed to right itself, no idea why. Thanks for your replies. I am using the latest version by the way.

Can you check for View->Display mode->Normal is on?
