Greetings, Inkscape newbe here. I've been through the beginners guide, and I'm working though the tutorials, but I've got a rather basic question for which I can't find an answer. I want to import an image (jpg or png versions available) of a simple WWI aircraft wing insignia, known as a Roundel. It is three concentric circles, blue outside, white middle, red inside. An .svg file is attached. I want to separate the image into three objects, one for each color, which I can then put on different layers and cut individually on a vinyl cutter. This should be easy, right? I am clueless, and would appreciate any help.
I looked at your file. It is not a vector object. It appears the be a raster bitmap image saved in SVG format. If I'm not mistaken, it can't be broken down into paths or individual paths or objects.
To get a vector image, probably the simplest way, is to create 3 circles using red, white, and blue. Red and blue on top of white. I will leave the steps for you to figure out.
Harry is right, for the most part. An image embedded in an SVG cannot be broken up, but it can be traced.
I would follow Harry's advice and create the three objects.
However, one would need to decide if they wanted to put the blue ring and red circle on top of a white circle having the same outer diameter as the blue ring, or cut the white as a ring and have all three objects fit edge-to-edge.
