Beyond the Basics Bending An Object Along A Path

This is for an animation. The Worms advance in the positive x direction every frame by 1mm, and the y direction I manually adjust so the path [red] and the longitudinal line inside the worm [worm wire] are aligned.

The straight worm is fine, I have done this before in other animations.

I am trying something new; I want the Worm to curve along the path.

Worm Group C1 is the curved worm.

Worm Group S1 is the straight worm.

I was trying to use lattice deformation but the grid needs to be smaller to fit the worm, can this be done or do I have to scale everything up to fit the lattice and then scale back down again when I am finished. I think I estimated about 26 frames will be needed to get the worm along the curve before the worm straightens again.

[Also: each Worm Group has 3 filters applied.]

OR: is there a better way to do this?

    Any help suggestions appreciated,

    cheers in advance, Sean.

Gah . . . Yeah. jumped the gun there, got the task sorted using 'bend'. I think I was having an elderly moment before.

No worries... just the fact that it's worms made my day.

    They are fun.

After I have plotted their course of travel, in this case about 50 frames, I will output the worms with a transparent background. I will then import into Gimp where I use a filter called Cubism. After that, I  re-import into Inkscape where I reassemble each frame with the background, in this case the city shot is transparent in the area of the sky and this is the top layer, and the sky is on the low layer, and the worms are sandwiched between so they disappear behind the building. When that is all done I will then export to png and convert the frames to mp4 using FFmpeg via a batch file.

The cubism filter adds a random element to the outline so the worms look like they are writhing when they move. The first animation I did is an advert destined for facebook advertising which is an 'in progress' thing at the moment to market my books where I have in the last few weeks been going through the throes of setting up a facebook page that I have to admit has not been as scary as I had been envisaging.

This animation is a spinoff from an experiment. The buildings come from a Cityscape I drew in Inkscape as a backdrop for the last animation. When I was trying to get my head around Gimp, I used the Cityscape as a test dummy on every Gimp filter, so I could get my head around the scope of what I might be able to do in Gimp, and in the process, one of the filters wrapped the building around onto itself like you see in this pic, and I liked the effect so much, I got the idea for this animation.

One of the Gimp experiments chopped the Cityscape up into blocks and I used this for the background for the facebook page. If you have a facebook account, try searching for seanrickardsciencefiction  as one word, all the art on my page is drawn with Inkscape and some pics are post-processed with Gimp. I am going to put everything up on my website as well but timewise that's a fair way down my todo list.

    cheers Sean
