Please check out this attachment. This has been happening to me for years, I've just brushed it off and dealt with it or changed my project up completely.
I thought it was about time maybe I ask about, because maybe someone else has gone through this or is going through this too and may have some knowledge on it.
Why exactly this happened I can´t say but I know this from 2D and 3D. Seems sometimes some internally values are missing or got corrupted and point/vertices were send to XY/XYZ=0
With a bit of luck you can try to select the nodes (if there any - most likely the handles are pointing to that certain place) with the node tool and delete - or you go to the origin point and weld some neighbor nodes.
I did try to find some handles to bring in, but the one merge point they all have back there at the top left somewhere, will not let me do anything to it. I tried grabbing it, deleting it, selecting it. Maybe I will try the eraser tool (even though that never seems to work for me either) :(
I believed you before and it is exactly the same problem as in 3d when too many points cross each other along their "normals". Please try to duplicate the path you want to widen first and then use Path->Simplify to reduce the number of nodes. Additionally go Fill&Stroke->Stroke; Set Join: round and Cap: round to avoid any calculation regarding the miter limit. Without that it won't work - way too many nodes in a small space.
I can try to visualize what happens actually with the contour trying to expanding this kind of complex path:
Lol...that was pretty neat visual. Unfortunately, when I followed your steps with my GRIND word, I still got those strands, or lines. Either way, I found a work around by exporting the word out as a png, took it to Photoshop, added a stroke to it in photoshop, imported it back into inkscape where I traced it with colors and BOOM! Got my vector outline looking how I needed it. Still an interesting concept though.

Please let me know, I would appreciate it.

Any chance to upload such a file?
I'll do ya one better. See it actually happen: http://somup.com/c3VrYRZUw4

You do not have to take this detour, You can make a bitmap copy and autotrace in Inkscape. Is this a regular font?
@webcat I think a node has been moved ( not sure )
