Beginners' Questions Viewing svg in image viewer and browser

Hi, I have just started using Inkscape to replace Illustrator and am having a couple of problems.

My system is Debian Buster (Gnome Desktop), Inkscape is 0.94.4 from the Debian repos.

I have created a multi-layer 70x70mm file for work which looks fine in Inkscape but when saved as an Inkscape svg or plain svg, trying to view it in an image viewer (eog) or browser (Waterfox Classic), most of the layers are invisible. However exporting to png or saving as pdf works fine.

The other problem is that most of the keyboard shortcuts do not work, the status bar shows something about filters. I realise that this may be an OS problem not inkscape but changing the shortcuts in preferences makes no difference.

Finally, my thanks to the developers for making Inkscape. A really great piece of software.

    Welcome to the forum!

This faq tells about part of your first problem:  https://inkscape.org/learn/faq/#viewing-svg-files-outside-inkscape-image-archive-or-gallery

If you used the Gradient Mesh or Flowed Text, nothing will display those outside of Inkscape.  We might be able to suggest alternatives, if we could see the SVG file. It's hard to say without knowing exactly what's in the file.  I can't think of any other elements that would not be displayed in a browser, besides those 2 things.  So there could be some other issue as well.  Is everything inside the page border?

And this one might help with your 2nd problem - at least for the Alt key, but maybe it will help with the others too?  https://inkscape.org/learn/faq/#alt-key-doesnt-work-linux

    Hi Bryn

Thanks for that, it was a flowed text issue. I didn't attach the file to my original question because it is a new work related thing and the company I work for would have to approve first.

As for the keyboard shortcuts, I'm pretty sure it is not Inkscape that is the problem.

As I install Debian/Gnome in a rather non-standard way, I will have to have a closer look.
