Beginners' Questions V1.4 am I missing some features

Three issues which I need guidance on!  I recently had two crashes in two days (V1.0.2) and a search online suggested that I enable Autosave.  Great idea, except that I could not find it.  Edit/Preferences/hmmm, no Autosave.  Some more searching (same suggestions) and I realized there is a new version, 1.4, so I downloaded that (Note;  Not easy with so many ancient versions and misleading links!).  Great, ten minutes later I've got V 1.4 and immediately looked for Autosave.  Not there!  So where is it?  Is it not included in V 1.4?  The other thing I noticed was that I am unable to change the background color to white.  It's very difficult for me to read small, fine gray print on black background.  I was able to do that on the previous version as well as Gimp.  Nothing under Document Properties or Preferences.  The third issue is, why can't I PERMANENTLY change units and paper size?  I prefer "inches" and "US 8 1/2 x 11).  I can do it individually with each file but it's a nuisance.  I've been using Inkscape intermittently for maybe five years and I'm no expert but I'm slowly getting it.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

    1. Autosave

Preferences > Input/Output > Autosave (default is for this to be enabled)

enable autosave, optionally set autosave directory, interval, max no.

    2. Background color

Not sure if you are talking about the theme colour or Page/Canvas colour

    Dark Theme to Light Theme

Preferences > Interface > Theming : check or uncheck Use Dark Theme

Page/Canvas colour - default is a white page on a grey canvas

File > Document Properties > Display on RHS - Page, Border, Desk(Canvas) colours can be adjusted

    3. Set preferred Template as Default

File > New from Template... choose US Letter (Portrait) 8.5 x 11 in. and open (adjust Page/Desk colours if you wish)

File > Save Template.. enable set as default template, optionally give it a different name

Thanks for the response.  Maybe I'm missing something but I'm not finding the settings for the first two - Autosave and Background Color.  I'm attaching two screen shots fyi.  I was able to save the template so thanks tons.

Thanks for the input.  If you look at my attached screen-shots you'll notice there is no "Theme" option under Input/Output.  Also I have no Autosave option.  Out of frustration I deleted and reloaded the software and suddenly I now have a "Theming" option but still no Autosave.  At least now I can read the menus.  Don't know why the default is grey print on black background but.....

I can live without autosave for now.  Maybe it'll appear out of the ether someday.

    Thanks for the help guys

Okay, I have to post this because it's really bizarre.  I just opened a new document, double-checked that it was ver 1.4, decided to check the preferences and AMAZING - and pay attention - Autosave appeared at the bottom of the Input/Output listing - but NOW there was no Theme selection.  I did select Autosave and set it for 6 mins.  So I closed the Preferences dropdown and reopened it and Autosave AND Theme selections are now gone but the theme has stayed at white background.  I'm not sure what's going on but as long as I have two out of three I'm happy!

Not sure but perhaps a reset preferences to default might help (possible corruption in upgrading from v1.0.2 to v1.4)

Preferences > System > button right side of User preferences:

[I was not able to view your screen shots, no software on my computer opens .docx files]
