Recently I reset Inkscape and now when I open Inkscape I get a new blank document, I want it to open the last closed one as I did previously. I have gone through all the settings but can't find it.

There is an option in preferences>interface>windows to see the splash screen with recent files when launching Inkscape.

No, that's not what I'm after unfortunately.  When I start the first instance of Inkscape I want Inkscape to automatically open up the last document I was editing when I closed it.  I've had it for years and now after this reset I can't find the setting. 

I am unfamiliar with that happening, and I've been using Inkscape for a while.

1. Describe your OS (your computer's Operating System: Mac/Windows/Linux/etc. & version).
2. Describe if Inkscape was newly installed, or upgraded from an earlier version.
3. Describe the version of Inkscape and the installer you used (the file you downloaded from the website: .msi/.exe/.zip/other ). 

Bonus points, if you:

• Attach* a screenshot of the issue.
• Attach* an example SVG file that has the issue.

* Posting links to outside hosts is also permitted, hotlinking (embedding) is not.

Never came across this feature on macOS. Just choose File->Open Recent… after start up which will replace the default new empty file.

Ok, I am officially losing my mind!

For some reason after the reset in all going to defaults, including different default new document template which I think is what threw me off, I for some reason thought it used to open the last closed document. The only thing I can think of is that I have used 'Open Recent' so many times with muscle memory and without thinking that it made believe the last document loaded upon opening Inkscape.   How did I figure this out? I'm glad you asked 🙂 I looked at another PC running 1.3 I also loaded a backup of my current 1.4 that I reset. I was so annoyed I dug up an old 2007 or so laptop with Inkscape 0.91 and all are the same.
