Beginners' Questions Making layers transparent.

    Circuits Circuits @Circuits

Hey guys, I am trying to figure out how I can make the second circle and forth circle go away in the image below. I want those portions of the image to be part of the background, but I am not sure how to pull that off. So that I only have three filled areas.. if that makes sense.. it should look like a target of sorts. The background is transparent. Is there a way to fill these areas with transparency so to speak?

You're thinking in terms of raster editors, such as The GIMP or Photoshop, where you might erase a particular set of pixels to make it transparent. In Inkscape you're dealing with vector objects, so the way to approach it is "how can I manipulate the objects to turn them into the shapes I want".

There are a few approaches to this, but given where you're at already I would use the second circle to cut a hole out of the middle of the first one, and the fourth circle to cut a hole out of the third one:

    1. Select the first circle.
    2. Hold Shift and select the second circle.
    3. Path > Difference.
    4. Repeat for circles three and four.

Be aware that this turns your first and third circles into paths, so they can no longer be manipulated using the Circle tool. In this case it probably doesn't matter, but it's something to be aware of. If this is a problem then an alternative would be to create the design using circles with thick strokes instead of the filled shapes you have currently.
