The manual shows editing tools for gradients. I see none in the app. I can create them but no editing beyond positioning.

Ensure the gradient tool is active and an object isΒ selected?

Clicking on a gradient node should be reflected in the Fill/Stroke dialog.

Yes gradient tool is active. The only thing that shows up in the fill and stroke is an image of the gradient. I turned on the option for the legacy tool. So now I have more options.

Inkscape now uses on-canvas gradient editing, with the old dialog - the legacy tool you mention - likely to be removed at some point. With the gradient tool selected you can double-click on the gradient line on the canvas to add a new stop, select stops to edit their colours, drag individual stops to change their position along the gradient, and move the end stops to change the gradient angle. The tool control bar also presents various buttons and options for dealing with other aspects of gradients.
