I can play with background fill for example and when I draw I see the colors change at the little preview near the cursor, but the final output is dashed empty rectangle which disappears

Not stupid at all. It's a common mistake made by beginners and experts alike - it's just that experts have the experience to look there sooner. Glad you found the solution though.
