Is there an option to create or control the length of a line?

Angle and Distance values are displayed in the Status Bar while you draw.

Yes but these are for information. I am asking how to control. For example a line with length 50mm at an angle of 27 deg? Can I create a line by inputting those values?

To master segment lenght, it sounds weird but it's a litlle bit complicated. You can, provided bounding boxes are set to geometric (inkscape preferences > tools) and caps are set to butt (fill and stroke panel, stroke style tab) :

    1. Draw an horizontal line, then with selector tool, alter the width of the object to the exact length you want.
    2. If you need to give your segment an angle, shift + drag the rotation handles opposite to the extremity you want to turn segment around. Or use transform panel, after moving rotation center to one end (use snapping to cusps nodes and rotation centers) : there you can enter the exact rotation value you want.

One could also use xml tool to modify d property and add v (lowercase) to make vertical segments of desired length (relative movements, uppercase V to make absolute movements), and h for horizontal movements. For example, v 50 will add a 50 units (mm if document units are mm) vertical segment.

It's not so easy : hope someone knows easier methods.

OMG...I thought this would be a super easy question...

Coming from CAD software (I use day by day basis) this is a very simple task and exist in all existing software. In fact I start to think/realize the difference between graphic designers and mechanical designers and that's why this function does not exist or is not implemented here.

    Correct, IMO.

    • Graphic designers Aesthetic is paramount
    • Mechanical designers: Function is paramount

    You are right!

I think there is a big value to add a CAD software developer to the Inkscape team to create a better software.

But I am not a software developer and I don't know the development process. And I don't know how an open software is developed (which is also different I suppose).

I use Inkscape with Autocad Fusion 360 (3D CAD) for many of my jewelry designs. It would be very difficult to do what I do without Inkscape. Inkscape is not just for graphicΒ designers, artist and illustrators. You would be surprised at how many crafters/makers use Inkscape for their products.Β

I can do in minutes in Inkscape that would take considerable time and frustration in CAD software. Inkscape is my tool of choice.Β

You are right. There are really powerful features that doesn't exist in none of the CAD software.
